Summary

No one is happy with the state ofWWE 2K24DLC. This year’s installment in the annual wrestling video game franchise has followed in its prdecessors' footsteps by putting out multiple DLC releases, each containing a handful of new playable wrestlers, on a rough monthly schedule since launch.

Player responses toWWE 2K’s DLC releases tend to be mixed. Some players reject the idea of paying extra for a smattering of new wrestlers out of hand. Ultimately, the overall reception depends on how many popular wrestlers are in each pack - if a couple of big-name NXT faces grace the cover, then players are much more likely to have a positive response to it. Butthe DLC packs forWWE 2K24to date have met with almost universally negative responses. There’s a clear problem in 2K’s approach, and there needs to be a pivot before2K25.

WWE 2K24 Has The Worst DLC On Record

Wasted Slots & Fumbled Releases

Almost none of the DLC forWWE 2K24has gotten a positive response, and it’s easy to see why. The only pack almost universally acknowledged as worthwhile was the first, theECW Punk Pack, containingECW legends like D-Von Dudley, his tag partner Bubba Ray Dudley, and CM Punk. It’s all been downhill from there, though. The next pack wasPost Malone & Friends, which came under fire for headlining a non-wrestler. Players would much rather have seen recently-returned wrestlers like Andrade, or literally any of the tens of missing NXT stars, added to the roster.

Things only got worse with the next (and, at the time of writing, most recent) DLC: thePat McAfee Pack. McAfee himself is no stranger to wrestling, and is a regular commentator on WWE, so his presence, at least, makes sense. Butthe rest of thePat McAfee Packis stuffed with more non-wrestlers-Pat McAfee Showco-hosts AJ Hawk, Boston Connor, Darius Butler, and Ty Schmit. They addressed this controversy on the show, with Schmit claiming that players were only upset because “they want some of these other losers that no one’s ever heard of from NXT to be in the game.”

So, insulted by the stars of a pack they never even wanted, many players simply declined to buy this DLC. But those who had purchased the Season Pass were stuck with it, and rightfully upset. To make matters worse, thePat McAfee Packwas also delayed a week from its original July 24 release date, coming out on July 31 instead. Andfor certain players, thePat McAfee Packwas broken at launch, with PS5 players unable to download it on the day of release.

How WWE 2K25 Can Do Better With DLC

A Diverse Roster Of Actual Wrestlers

There are only two DLC packs left forWWE 2K24, and they look fine - the first, theGlobal Superstars Pack, includes Carlito, Nia Jax, and Kairi Sane, while theWCW Packincludes old-school legends like Lex Luger, Mr. Perfect, and the Iron Sheik. While players interested in those particular wrestlers will surely find a lot to love in these packs, others have writtenWWE 2K24DLC off entirely. It’s clear thatWWE 2K25needs to do better, and the path to redemption is obvious.

“Nobody Wanted This” - WWE 2K24’s New DLC Characters Met With Backlash From Fans

One of WWE 2K24’s DLC packs will include some controversial characters as playable wrestlers. Here’s why fans are upset at these unwanted inclusions.

First and foremost:WWE 2K25’s DLC doesn’t need to include a single non-wrestler. Players have made it abundantly clear that they aren’t interested in celebrity cameos. They don’t want to see Post Malone in the ring with Bad Bunny; they want to see how their favorite wrestlers of the modern day would fare against the superstars of twenty years ago, or give their underrated NXT idols a championship run. Instead, its DLC should attempt to introduce wrestlers who sign back onto WWE after the game’s roster is announced, or the NXT Superstars most likely to be called up in the coming year. Classic wrestlers who aren’t currently signed onto the WWE roster are always a good idea as well.

WWE 2K24 Superstarts in focus including The Undertaker, Steve Austin and The Rock

Players have already made their frustrations with the current state of DLC known; theWWEgames' social media channels are flooded with negative comments about thePat McAfee Packand everything that came before it. Releasing meaningful DLC is good for everybody: players have more options, and publishers sell more copies. The next WWE game has a lot to learn fromWWE 2K24’s DLC disappointments.
