Summary
Warning: SPOILERS forAnnihilation 2099 #1Marvel just declared a future version ofWolverine"the galaxy’s greatest super solider" – begging the question of where that leavesCaptain Americaand hisreputation as inarguably the most iconic. However, the case can be made that Wolverine has always been a super-solider – and his role in the2099timeline simply takes that to its logical endpoint.
Annihilation 2099#1includes a story entitled “The Last Nova” – written by Steve Orlando, with art by Ibraim Roberson – introduces fans to a new version of Wolverine existing as the titular Human Rocket of 2099. But it’s the issue’s “First Appearance” variant cover by Pete Woods that elevates Logan’s intergalactic status.

With the text, “featuring the origin of the Galaxy’s Greatest Super-Soldier,” emblazoned over a Nova-powered Wolverine springing into action, Logan’s futuristic status quo puts him leagues above his previous incarnations in terms of power. But it also outstrips Marvel’s premiere Super-Soldier, Steve Rogers, in terms of prestige.

Wolverine is Captain America’s true equal as a super-soldier. After all, both heroes are products of the Weapon Plus program.
Considering Wolverine’s infamous healing factor and his generally hard-to-kill nature, it’s not that surprising that the Cakuncklehead would have survived into the future of Marvel 2099. And while he’s not always been one of the House of Ideas’ most cosmically powered crimefighters,Wolverine is no stranger to waror service. With the power of the Nova Force combining itself with his own already formidable mutant abilities, the fan-favorite X-Men icon truly earns is new moniker as the galaxy’s greatest super-soldier, but it’sLogan’s unique relationship with Captain Americathat makes this nickname all the more interesting.

Beyond Steve’s more obvious counterparts, like Winter Soldier or Isaiah Bradley, Wolverine is Captain America’s true equal as a super-soldier. After all, both heroes are products of the Weapon Plus program, with Steve retroactively considered Weapon I after the program was created following Project Rebirth. This means Logan is Steve’s direct successor as Weapon X, andwith Wolverine’s mutant healing and adamantium skeleton, it’s arguable that he is already a superior super-soldier compared to Cap. However, with his additional Nova-infused firepower in 2099, it’s no question that Wolverine has clearly outpaced the original.
In the world of Marvel 2099, it’s no question that Wolverine has far and away outdone Captain America’s super-soldier street cred.

Wolverine
The human mutant Wolverine (a.k.a. Logan) was born James Howlett, blessed with a superhuman healing factor, senses, and physiology. Subjecting himself to experimentation to augment his skeleton and claws with adamantium, Logan is as deadly as he is reckless, impulsive, and short-tempered. Making him the X-Men’s wildest and deadliest member, and one of Marvel Comics' biggest stars. He’s played in Fox and Marvel’s movie franchises by Hugh Jackman.

Inheriting Cap’s Legacy, Not Taking His Place
Wolverine and Captain America are friends, allies, and super-soldiers, but only one of these Marvel legends can truly be the greatest. With a case to be made thatLogan is already a superior soldiertoSteve Rogers even in their default status quo, that title is ultimately up for grabs in the prime continuity of Earth-616.In the world of Marvel 2099, it’s no question that Wolverine has far and away outdone Captain America’s super-soldier street cred, in his role as the last Nova.
Annihilation 2099#1is available now from Marvel Comics.
Captain America
Initially debuting in 1940, Captain America is the patriotically themed superhero who has shared the title with only a few individuals. Beginning with Steve Rogers, Captain America’s birth resulted from a frail man taking part in an experimental U.S. Army super-soldier trial, which imbued him with super-human abilities. The character is often depicted wielding a nigh unbreakable and aerodynamic shield made of vibranium that they use to defend and attack their foes.
