Warning: Contains SPOILERS for Alien: Romulus!
Although the Xenomorph are an incredibly deadly species, one of the Xenomorph inAlien: Romulusmakes the seemingly strange decision not to kill Kay, and here is why. ThroughoutAlien: Romulus, several characters meet deadly fates at the hands of the Xenomorph, with the Xenomorph continuing to make thierkill counts that they have amassed throughout theAlienfranchiseeven higher. However, the Xenomorph miss an easy kill near the end ofAlien: Romulus, and while it is never explicitly explained why, the film subtly highlights why the aliens didn’t kill Kay.
Alien: Romulusis theAliensequel that brought the beloved sci-fi series back to its original form, with it maintaining the tone and storyline of the originalAlienmovies while still carrying over some elements from the later films, such as theblack goo fromPrometheus. Because of this,Alien: Romulusis the firstAlienmovie in a while to make the Xenomorph truly terrifying, with the film ominously setting them up as relentless killing machines. However, this is contradicted when the Xenomorph makes the surprising decision not to kill Kay, but it seems as it the alien had a bigger plan for her.

The Xenomorph Wanted Kay To Become A Chestburster Host
It Was Saving Her For A Facehugger
After wading their way through a hallway filled with facehuggers, Rain and theAlien: Romulusgang find themselves on one side of a door, with their friend Kay being on the other side. Despite Kay panicking,Andy refuses to open the door for Kay, going against the wishes of Rain. This is because Andy knows that there is a Xenomorph in the room, with it eventually spearing Kay and dragging her away. However, it turns out that Kay isn’t dead, with Rain eventually being found in a cocoon by Rain and Tyler.
I Wish Alien: Romulus Brought Back A Different Actor To Be Rook
Rook is one of the biggest points of contention in the new Alien: Romulus movie. I’d rather have seen a different actor returning to the franchise.
When Kay is found, it is at the end of a long hallway of new characters who have become trapped in black goo, with them being used as fodder for facehuggers. TheXenomorph that are on board theRomulusseem to have devised a complex system of farming humans in order to produce more chestbursters, and it looks like Kay was meant to be one of the humans added to this farm. Luckily, Rain and Tyler were able to find her before she was implanted with a chestburster, saving her life from the Xenomorph.

Did The Xenomorph Know Kay Was Pregnant?
Could It Sense Her Baby?
One popular theory that has emerged since the release ofAlien: Romulusis that theXenomorph somehow knew that Kay was pregnant, with this possibly being behind its decision to not kill her. Pregnancy and motherhood has been a major theme throughout theAlienfranchise, with Ripley’s daughter inAliensand the alien that is implanted within her inAlien 3being major plot points in both movies. It has been hinted that the Xenomorph have some sort of connection to pregnancy, with this potentially being the reason that it didn’t kill Kay.
Obviously the Xenomorph didn’t know that Kay was going to give birth to the hybrid baby fromthe end ofAlien: Romulus, as it couldn’t have known that she was going to inject herself with the black goo. However, this pregnancy may have played a role in the Xenomorph’s decision to make Kay fodder for a chestburster. Rather than immediately assigning a facehugger to Kay, she is instead places in a cocoon. This cocoon could have potentially maintained Kay until her baby was born, giving the Xenomorph another human to attach a facehugger to.

Alien: Romulus' Xenomorph Not Killing Kay Connects To Saving Rain
The Xenomorph Only Directly Kills Men In Romulus
Although the Xenomorph not killing Kay inAlien: Romulusmay have a subtle story explanation,it also thematically connects to the Xenomorph saving Rain. During the elevator shaft sequence, the gravity tuns back on as Rain is floating up, causing her to fall. Although she was going to die, a Xenomorph actually saves her, catching the protagonist on her way down. If the Xenomorph’s goal was to simply kill her, then it would have just let her die. However, it’s decision to save her highlights an interesting part of the Xenomorph.
It’s Official: We’re Never Getting An Answer To Prometheus' Biggest Unresolved Mystery
Prometheus set out to answer some major questions posed by the original Alien movie, but it’s increasingly clear that they’ll remain mysterious.
InAlien: Romulus, the Xenomorph never kill the women of the group.Navarro is killed by a chestburster, Kay is saved for later, and Rain is saved by the Xenomorph. Meanwhile, the Xenomorph directly attack some of the other members of theAlien: Romuluscast, showing that they are ok with killing men. This interesting detail undoubtedly has a thematic point, with it being an aspect ofAlien: Romulusthat requires some more analysis.
