A sequel to the 2017 heist movieLogan Luckynever came to fruition. The film was directed by Steven Soderbergh, who created one of the greatest heist movie franchises ever made withthe Ocean’s trilogy.Logan Luckyfollows two brothers, Clyde Logan and Jimmy Logan, who try to pull off an ambitious heist during a NASCAR race in North Carolina.Logan Luckyis currently streaming on Netflixafter releasing in theaters in August 2017,earning a worldwide box office total of roughly $48.4 millionagainst a production budget of $29 million.
Logan Luckyhas a great ensemble castled by Channing Tatum, Adam Driver, and Daniel Craig. AlthoughLogan Luckywasn’t successful at the 2017 box office, the filmearned an impressive Rotten Tomatoes critic score of 92%, making it one of the highest-rated movies of the year. With a great ensemble cast, an intriguing premise, a seasoned heist director, anda strong critical reception, it’s surprising thatLogan Luckywas not a big hit on its initial release, since it has all the ingredients of a successful movie. Had it been, a sequel may have actually happened.

Steven Soderbergh Considered A Logan Lucky Prequel Focused On Daniel Craig’s Character
HadLogan Luckybeen the box office hit that it arguably should have been, Soderbergh would have likely gone through with his vision for aLogan Luckyprequel. The prequel would have focused more intently on the backstory of Joe Bang, a convicted safe-cracker who is in on the heist and portrayed by Daniel Craig in the 2017 film. While Craig was still in the thick of his 15-year tenure as James Bond whenLogan Luckywas released, the Joe Bang character allowed him to take on a more comedic role.
Soderbergh himself actually revealed that he developed a prequel idea in a Reddit AMA, saying “WELL, we had a prequel all teed up about how Joe Bang got thrown in jail, but when the movie didn’t perform well enough to justify another go, we dropped the idea.…”. With Logan Lucky currently trending in Netflix’s Top 10 Movies List and Craig no longer committed to the 007 franchise, the prequel could find new life in the 2020s. However, since it’s a prequel, the character of Joe Bang would likely have to be recast, which adds more risk to the project.

Daniel Craig’s First Post-007 Movie Role Couldn’t Be Further From James Bond
Daniel Craig is set to appear in his first new role after retiring as James Bond, and his upcoming movie couldn’t be more different from 007.
Box Office Performance & The First Movie’s Story Didn’t Justify The Need For Logan Lucky 2
Current streaming popularity could gain momentum but likely not enough
Ultimately,Logan Luckywasn’t able to perform well enough at the box office to justify a prequel, sequel, or any extension of the original movie. Although the cast and premise ofLogan Luckyare both quite strong,Logan Luckywas just one of those films that was unable to catch enough fire to warrant a box office success. What’s more, with Craig being one of the main draws of the original film in the first place, it seemsillogical to bank on the continuation of his character with another actor, since the story didn’t exactly hit the cultural zeitgeist. Regardless,Logan Luckycan still be enjoyed on Netflix.
