As shown several times in the past,Saw was fiercely independent and unwilling to work with anyone who didn’t share his extremist views, so the Cavern Angels were likely painted specifically to distinguish the Partisans from the Rebel Alliance. Additionally, as the name suggests, the Cavern Angels were often hidden in caves and other hiding spots across the galaxy as the Partisans avoided the Empire. The black paint might have helped the X-Wings blend into the shadows.
