Tony Stark has created customIron Manarmor for a select few Marvel heroes, including Steve Rogers' Captain America andFantastic Four’s Reed Richards- but no-one ever expected him to giveUltronthe same upgrade. Indeed, it turns out that it took a seemingly impossible event for Tony to outfit the Mad Android… and then recruit him as one of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.
The metal is so durable that even Captain Marvel couldn’t bend it, and Wolverine’s adamantium claws buckled against it.

InWest Coast Avengers #4- by Gerry Duggan, Danny Kim, Arthur Hesli and Joe Caramagna - Tony Stark recounts the events that inspired him to recruit Ultron to the West Coast Avengers. One of the Avengers' oldest and deadliest enemies, Ultron was created by Hank Pym and is obsessed with slaughtering humanity and especially his father’s heroic allies. However,West Coast Avengersreveals thatwhen Ultron attempted to sacrifice himself to save the Earth, Tony saved his life.
Iron Man saves Ultron from being sucked into an imploding black hole bomb by instructing his Mysterium armor to merge with Ultron. The suit allows Ultron to escape, combining the android’s own advanced design with Tony’s most sophisticated armor yet.

Marvel Has Its Next Iron Man Ready to Go - So Pull the Trigger Already!
Marvel fans are missing Iron Man since Tony Stark perished in Avengers: Endgame, but there’s another hero ready and waiting to take his place.
Ultron’s Sacrifice Convinced Iron Man to Recruit Him as an Avenger
But There’s Still an Evil Ultron… In Fact, There Are Dozens
InWest Coast Avengers, fans recently learned that Ultron - concluding that his methods have only led to failure - has split into a number of new bodies, each following a different extreme theory about how to thrive on Earth. While attempting to train a group of reformed villains as the new West Coast Avengers, Iron Man encounters anUltron who has decided to become an allyto humanity. This Ultron proves his commitment to his mission by attempting to sacrifice himself in order to neutralize an alien weapon planted on Earth, and would have died if Tony hadn’t deployed his armor to save the former villain.
Tonydeveloped the Mysterium armorwhile working with Emma Frost and the X-Men, using a new material accessed from the White Hot Room - a realm of pure creation existing outside time and space. The metal is so durable that even Captain Marvel couldn’t bend it, and Wolverine’s adamantium claws buckled against it.It also has unusual properties that make it impossible for magic to detect or affect it, and it is invisible to Spider-Man’s spider-sense. Ironically, this is probably the most powerful form Ultron has ever had, even though it only lasts for around a minute.

Mysterium was only introduced to Marvel lore in 2020, so even letting Ultron know it exists could be a major mistake. Before now, Ultron has constructed some of his most powerful bodies from Vibranium, but Mysterium would be an even bigger threat.
The fact that Ultron was willing to give up this powerful new form suggests he’s truly serious about seeing through his commitment to protecting humanity. Ultron’s willingness to sacrifice himself shows thatthisversion of Ultron is sincerely heroic, even ifotherUltrons out there aren’t as altruistic. The attempted sacrifice was enough for Iron Man to recruit Ultron to his new team, even as his fellow recruits recognize the danger posed by their teammate. However,Ultron’s greater goal is still to find new ways to thrive, and his hatred for humanity is encoded deep in his being - didIron Manjust turn a major threat into an Avenger, or did he saddle the team with a ticking time bomb?
