Summary
Twistershas passed a major global box office milestone. The new movie, which stars Glen Powell, Daisy Edgar-Jones, and Anthony Ramos, is a standalone sequel to the 1996 diaster movie hitTwisterthat follows a scientist who teams up with a reckless storm chaser and his team to test a new tracking device. TheTwistersbox officedebuted with a strong opening weekend of $81 million and the movie quickly rose to become one of the Top 10 highest-grossing movies of the year so far.
PerVariety, as of Sunday morning,Twisterswas projected to take in an additional $15.4 million at the domestic box office by the end of its fourth weekend in theaters. When its projected international grosses for the weekend were added to that haul, this brought its overall projected cumulative worldwide total to $310 million. This easily pushes the movie past the $300 million milestone, making it the ninth 2024 release to pass that particular financial benchmark so far, behindDeadpool & Wolverine.

Twisters Still Hasn’t Outgrossed The Original 1996 Movie
Twister Was An Incomprehensibly Huge Hit
While theTwistersreleaseis a success by almost any measure, it still has not been able to match the success of the original smash hitTwister. However, this is a tall order, as the original movie - which starred Helen Hunt and Bill Paxton - was a massive blockbuster that became the second highest-grossing movie of 1996 behind the iconic Roland Emmerich disaster movieIndependence Day. By the end of its theatrical run,it had grossed $495.7 million worldwide, a total that is still nearly $200 million out of its sequel’s reach.
It remains to be seen if the new movie can climb that high. It may still build steam because theTwisterscastincludes Glen Powell, who recently played roles in the box office powerhousesTop Gun: MaverickandAnyone But You. However, given the fact that it’s already in its fourth weekend and now has competition from the record-breakingDeadpool & Wolverine, the sequel doesn’t seem likely to close that gap. This is especially the case when the 1996 movie’s total is adjusted for inflation, as it would have grossed $994.49 million if that total was earned in modern currency.

Top Gun: Maverickwas the second highest-grossing movie of 2022, whileAnyone But Youis the highest-grossing romantic comedy of the decade so far.
However, the fact thatTwisterslikely will not outgross its predecessor does not mean that it is a failure. The movie cost roughly $90 million, so by passing this milestone, it has already more than tripled its production budget. This means the movie is more or less guaranteed to be in the black, as the average movie has turned a profit by the time it has earned back two-and-a-half times its budget.
