However, this is a tall order, as the original movie - which starred Helen Hunt and Bill Paxton - was a massive blockbuster that became the second highest-grossing movie of 1996 behind the iconic Roland Emmerich disaster movieIndependence Day. By the end of its theatrical run,it had grossed $495.7 million worldwide, a total that is still nearly $200 million out of its sequel’s reach.
It remains to be seen if the new movie can climb that high. It may still build steam because theTwisterscastincludes Glen Powell, who recently played roles in the box office powerhousesTop Gun: MaverickandAnyone But You. However, given the fact that it’s already in its fourth weekend and now has competition from the record-breakingDeadpool & Wolverine,the sequel doesn’t seem likely to close that gap. This is especially the case when the 1996 movie’s total is adjusted for inflation, as it would have grossed $994.49 million if that total was earned in modern currency.
Top Gun: Maverickwas the second highest-grossing movie of 2022, whileAnyone But Youis the highest-grossing romantic comedy of the decade so far.
However, the fact thatTwisterslikely will not outgross its predecessor does not mean that it is a failure.
