This article contains spoilers from The Umbrella Academy season 4.

Summary

The Umbrella Academy’s cast discusses their characters' sacrifices in the series finale and whether they could ever return. The popular Netflix series came to a close with the superpowered characters letting themselves be consumed by the Cleanse to end the broken timelines and apocalypses. Along with dying, this sacrifice meant that theHargreeves siblingswere erased from all history, making it seem as if they had never existed even though they saved the universe.

In an interview withPeople,Ben Hargreeves actor Justin H. Min and Allison Hargreeves actor Emmy Raver-Lampman spoke about the fates of their charactersand why the series needed to end that way. They also speculated on whether this is a definitive end for the various members of the Hargreeves family, or if they could be further explored in spinoffs that take place before their final sacrifice. Check out the actors' comments below:

Min: My own personal interpretation I do feel like it’s a closed chapter, a closed loop. It was the sacrifice that the Umbrella Academy needed to make in order for the world to be normal. I’m glad characters like Hazel are finding their happy ending with Agnes and all of these things. For me, that’s the end. It would be so exciting [to do a spinoff in the future]. There’s already spinoff comics for the Klaus character. I think Robbie [Sheehan] would have so much fun with that. I think Aidan would love something with Five. I would love to watch that. Any of them really. I think that’s the beauty of great writing. They’ve written these fully fleshed characters out so that if we wanted to delve in deeper to any one of them, they could have more to do.

Raver-Lampman: It’s an attempt at peace that the sacrifice that the siblings made was not in vain. That the people that they cared about or these characters that the audience cares about are still in existence somehow, somewhere. [But] anything is possible. It’s closing a chapter, but it’s not fully concluded because the magic of our show is it leaves you guessing. So if that last sequence kind of leaves people two years from now being like, “I wonder…” It’s like, “Who knows?” It’s just giving a little bit of hope that they made the ultimate sacrifice and it wasn’t in vain.

Will Any Umbrella Academy Spinoffs Happen?

Various Stories Could Still Be Explored

The Umbrella Academy’s endingis a definitive conclusion for the main series and rules out season 5. Nevertheless,a spinoff series that takes place before the series finale is possible. Min mentions the possibility of a spinoff centered around Five (Aidan Gallagher), which could be intriguing given all the years Five spent navigating the apocalypse in his original timeline, along with the years he spent as a formidable assassin working for the Commission.

Another version of Five was later revealed to have founded the Commission.

This organization presents many potential scenarios as it can move throughout various points in history, much like the TVA does in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The Commission’s Hazel (Cameron Britton) and Cha-Cha (Mary J. Blige) were some of thebest parts ofThe Umbrella Academyseason 1, and a spinoff set before that season could revive their entertaining dynamic without undermining Hazel’s character development. Min also mentioned that Klaus (Robert Sheehan) already has spinoff comics, andKlaus' antics could translate well to an irreverent story about his countless escapades.

The Umbrella Academy Season 4: Release Date, Cast, Story, Trailer & Everything We Know

Netflix’s adaptation of Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá’s comics has released season 3. Here’s everything we know about The Umbrella Academy season 4.

Umbrella Academyspinoffs are viable, but the main narrative issue is that many of its characters cannot have meaningful character development. All the aforementioned spinoffs about Five, Hazel, or Klaus would show the characters stuck in a self-destructive cycleand unable to break free, because they do not truly grow and change for the better untilThe Umbrella Academy. Following up on the characters' noble sacrifices with spinoffs where they were more self-serving could feel jarring and weaken the show’s ending.
