As you get started inThe First Berserker: Khazan, the skill trees can be a bit overwhelming while you get used to how things work. There are four main skill trees to choose from, with three weapon trees and a common skill tree that includes global or general skills that Khazan can use for any weapon. The three weapon types are Dual Wields, Spears, and Great Swords, and they each have skills that are unlocked incrementally as you increase your Mastery Level, which extends up to Mastery Level 34 for the best skills in each tree.

Before you get there though, you’re going to have to defeat quite a few ofThe First Berserker: Khazan’smany bosses, and there are many early skills you’ll need to master before you get to those more powerful skills. In the beginning, your best bet is to pick a favorite weapon based on the stats you’ve primarily been investing in and what quality and level weapons you have at your disposal. There are some clear front-runners in each weapon skill tree for the best early stats to grab first, while there are some essential stats in the common tree.

Best Dual Wield Skills To Get Early

If you’re focusing on the Dual Wield weapon tree, you’ll have a few great starter options as well as some must-have abilities at Mastery Level 2. Blowback is an easy damage-boosting passive that deals damage on a successful brink guard. Blazing Assault and Massive Blow will enhance your basic attacks, butWind Chaser and Outrage from the Frenzy tree are easily the best Sprint Attack optionsavailable early on. Ruthless takes the cake for best Dual Wield spirit skill available in the beginning of the game.

The First Berserker: Khazan Review - Simply One of the Best Souls-Likes In Years

Neople’s The First Berserker: Khazan is a best-in-class new Souls-like featuring excellent combat, creative level design, and brilliant bossfights.

At Level 10, you’ll gain access to the Flash Cutter and Wind Piercer spirit skills, which are a step above anything else in the Dual Wield tree so far. Flash Cutter is another swift attack that lets you rush at enemies when you release the input, and can be charged up to deal increased damage at the cost of an additional spirit point. Wind Piercer lets Khazanlaunch his axe at a target and then lunge forward and attack them. This skill will come in very useful by the time you reachThe First Berserker Khazan’sViper boss, and possibly even sooner.

Best Greatsword Skills To Get Early

The Greatsword is a heavier, slightly slower weapon than the other two options, and in my view, benefits most from Potent Blow skills in the early stages of the game. In particular,Ghost Arm Block makes it so you may charge Potent Blow attacks without being interrupted, as long as you guard against them in the process. This makes the Great Sword extremely viable for depleting larger enemy stamina bars, as Potent Blows would otherwise be interrupted quite easily. The Giant Hunt spirit skill will makebosses like Yetugamuch more manageable.

“Since the Great Sword takes a while to wind up, I recommend grabbing the Heat of the Battle opening skill in the Unbreakable tree, which will decrease the damage you take when attacking.”

Since the Great Sword takes a while to wind up, I recommend grabbing the Heat of the Battle opening skill in the Unbreakable tree, which will decrease the damage you take when attacking. At level 10, you’ll gain access to three different spirit skills. The first is Phantom: Night’s Veil, whichdeals Blade Phantom damage after a stabbing explosion. War Cry is a defensive stance that can increase poise, while Counterstrike is an awesome defensive counter-attack move that takes some good timing but is worth checking out in the early levels.

Best Spear Skills To Get Early

The spear is my personal weapon of choice because it has some of the best early spirit skills available and is a diverse and versatile weapon suited for many different enemies. Moonlight and Moonlight Stance are very straightforward yet effective early skills to grab for the Spear, and the afterimage attacks are useful in every situation. Afterimage Strike and Spiral Thrust are different versions of the same form of attack, so I wouldn’t recommend taking both. Crescent Strike is a heavier attack but can be executed quickly, andit deals ridiculous damage when you hit a weak point.

When The First Berserker: Khazan Unlocks In Your Region

The First Berserker: Khazan has different unlock times depending on the region you’re playing in, and the edition you bought. Here’s when it launches.

Assault and Shadow Reversal are excellent attack skills to grab early on, and add to the diverse range of moves available for the Spear. Shadow Reversal is an impaling move that can befollowed up to position you behind the enemy if their stance was brokenby the attack. At Level 10, new spirit skills for the spear are available to add to Khazan’s arsenal, and I’d take Heatwave first as it adds a defensive option in terms of spirit skills, spinning the blade to prevent brink guard all incoming attacks.

Best Common Skills To Get Early In The First Berserker

Reflection Is An Essential Parry Skill

You will automatically gain two of the Common skills as you progress through the opening sequences of the game - Javelin and Counterattack. However, there are a few absolutely essential Common skills to grab outside of these: Brutal Attack: Execution and Reflection.Brutal Attack will allow you to deal a massive executing blow to exhausted enemies, which is much more powerful than a typical brutal attack. Reflection is an essential Parrying skill that deals stamina damage opens enemies up for undefended attacks.

There are also various ways to boost your spirit gain under the Resources skill tree. If you’re not generating enough spirit and don’t feel like you’re able to use your skills often enough, consider investing in one of these for more passive ways to increase spirit. Overall, the choices you make when it comes to skills in the early parts ofThe First Berserker: Khazanare dependent on your playstyle to a certain extent, as well as the specific weapon type you prefer.
