Being as meticulous and careful as he is,Jackal is looking for ways to cover himself, with a potential cover story, and a way to get exclusive access to the building where UDC is due to appear.

By going on a date, drinking in public, then returning to Rasmus' home for the night, Jackal is laying down roots for a cover story, and building trust with Rasmus. He will likely try to manipulate this trust to then ask for a private tour of the concert hall, access to restricted areas, and potentially getting a way in or out of the building when he performs the assassination. So, while it seems like Jackal has just cheated on his wife while their marriage is on the rocks, it seems likely that he has ulterior motives that he feels justify and excuse his behavior. It doesn’t make it right, but it certainly raises the stakes for what is about tohappen inThe Day of the Jackal.
