The Conjuring: Last Riteshas begun filming, confirms franchise veteran and creator James Wan. As thefourth movie inThe Conjuringfranchise, the movie will serve as the swan song for the main series. The Conjuringfollowed paranormal experts and demonologists Ed and Lorraine Warren (played by Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga respectively) as they rid a family’s house of an evil entity. The film was such a success that it led to two sequels and several spinoffs, most of them performing well with critics and grossing an impressive $2 billion at the global box office.

Co-producerWantook to Instagram to share a photo from the set ofThe Conjuring: Last Rites. The photo itself is a picture of Wilson and Farmiga’s chairs, with their character names stitched onto the backs. In the caption, Wan says that it’s always good to hang out with old friends and thathe’s going to miss everyone, as the film marks the “End of an era.”See the post and Wan’s caption below:

What This Means For The Conjuring: Last Rites

This Really Is The End For The Warrens

Wan’s photo serves two purposes. The first is an assurance thatthe movie is on track for its September 2025 release. So far, the only other horror movie scheduled for that month is the untitledSaw XI, which releases at the end of September. If all continues to go well,The Conjuring: Last Ritesshould be a worthy late-summer blockbuster release with little competition, boding well for its box office performance. This is not because it needs the extra boost, as the franchise has already proved to be successful.

Secondly, the post serves as a bittersweet reminder thatThe Conjuring’s main storyline is coming to an end.The Conjuringmovieshave always been the strongest of the franchise, especially the first and second, which were both directed by Wan. This final film won’t be directed by him, but will instead be helmed by Michael Chaves, who directed the franchise’s last entry. WhileThe Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do Itdivided critics, it scored well with viewers, so expect fans to flock to the upcoming movie. So far,Last Rites’status as the Warrens' final adventure is holding true.

Our Take On James Wan’s Conjuring Set Photo

WhileI’m in the same boat as viewers who are a bit mournful thatThe Conjuring’s main films are coming to an end, I have high hopes for the franchise’s future. Besides the main movies that follow Ed and Lorraine, the horror series still has a lot to offer, like the spinoffs featuring the infamous Nun and Annabelle. There’s alsoThe ConjuringTV seriesthat’s in the works.

While I’d be fine with either, I’m more interested and more hopeful in The Conjuring: Last Rites serving as a proper swan song for the characters.

While little is known about the series, there’s a lot of speculation and high hopes that Ed and Lorraine Warren will appear. Their involvement will likely depend on the events ofLast Rites, which could end their stories in a permanent way. It could also be that they will receive a satisfying ending that doesn’t require a continuation. While I’d be fine with either, I’m more interested and more hopeful inThe Conjuring: Last Ritesserving as a proper swan song for the characters.
