When it comes to fictional legal drama, it makes sense that the fabricated stories can be spectacular and over the top, but that doesn’t mean they can just avoid reason and sense altogether, as evidenced bySuits' most divisive plotline.Suitswas never made to be a documentary. The series is firmly grounded in fiction, with the bulk of the early story dedicated to exploring the relationship between an unlicensed con practicing as a lawyer, under the tutelage of a brilliant, but reckless, senior partner in a top New York law firm.
The show is entertainment, and no one expects it to be consistent with reality. However, when the show designs the characters and sees them develop along certain paths, the audience expects that they will continue to follow those established journeys, occasionally altering course and adapting as time goes by. But one storyline inSuitsseason 3took Harvey Specter completely out of character, resulting in a frustrating dilution of the character.

Harvey Plotting Against Jessica In Suits Season 3 Made No Sense
Harvey Went Against Character Type In Season 3
From early inSuits' timeline, the show explores the tense dynamics between competitive lawyers. It sees individuals working at thetop level of Pearson Hardman working against each otherin an effort to get and keep control. The show reveals that before it was Pearson Hardman, the company had another named partner, Van Dyke, and prior to that, it was Gordon Schmidt Van Dyke, which highlights that neither Jessica nor Daniel Hardman were founders of the firm.

Harvey Was All About Loyalty (Yet He Still Betrayed Jessica)
Jessica & Harvey Go Way Back In Suits
Harvey often proves how muchloyalty is a core value for him throughoutSuits. He keeps people close once he trusts them, and he values these relationships deeply. This can be seen in his lengthy partnership with Donna Paulsen, who worked as his secretary when he was an ADA, and continued to work alongside Harvey at Pearson Hardman. It’s also evidenced in hispartnership with Mike Ross, a person whom he values immensely, and actively takes risks for.
But while Mike is a relatively recent colleague, Harvey has been working with Jessica for a lot longer. And prior to them working together, the pair had a history that stretched back to the beginning of Harvey’s career. He owed Jessica everything, and Jessica didn’t try to dangle that over his head. She reveled in his success, and celebrated his growth. SoHarvey turning his back on that mentor and friendis the worst kind of betrayal, and one that simply does not fit with the character.

Suits Season 3 Was Great But Almost Ruined Harvey’s Character
There was a lot to praise inSuitsseason 3. The return of Van Dyke, the tension as Mike comes close to getting caught, the changes around Pearson Hardman with the introduction of Darby, and the continued interpersonal relationship developments between the core characters are all exciting. It also has anestablished story with each character feeling more familiar, and the plots from earlier seasons beginning to thicken, while new threats and challenges emerge. But despite all of that, this narrative withHarvey trying to unseat Jessicafeels out of place.
Harvey Specter’s 10 Best Episodes In Suits To Watch Before Gabriel Macht’s Suits LA Return
The best episodes featuring Harvey Specter in Suits outline his character arc, summing it up perfectly before his cameo in the spinoff, Suits L.A.
Harvey is not a backstabber. He is a character who may be sharp, cruel, and deceitful at times, but when he is doing something, he usually has the decency to do it to a person’s face rather than behind their backs. His actions with Jessica felt needless, and out of place, and the fact that this was developed as part of the storyline in season 3 brings down the overall quality due to a weird characterization of this pivotal figure. Fortunately, it didn’t really take hold, and the plot was buried under more interesting things inSuitsseason 3, but it certainly didn’t help Harvey’s image.
