While Sony continues to struggle to bring its Sony Spider-Man Universe together, a fan on Instagram has delivered an incrediblecrossover between Spider-Man 2099 and Venomin awesome fanart. User grozell573 has an account where they showcase some beautiful artwork that largely revolves around the Spider-Verse movies, with a lot of attention given to Miguel O’Hara, aka Spider-Man 2099. Early in 2024, the artist posted a set of work in progress images that saw Venom and Spider-Man 2099 go head to head in a spectacular fashion.
Of course, this is simply a fan’s efforts toshow off their skills and pay homage to a beloved series of movies, but it also feels like a missed opportunity for Sony. While the animated Spider-Verse continues to release spectacular new stories, the SSU appears to be struggling to deliver meaningful stories that earn big at the box office. And now that their biggest earner,Venom, has had their final entry with Tom Hardyin the hot seat released, it feels further away than ever for a crossover to occur.

What The Spider-Man 2099 Vs Venom Art Means
An SSU Crossover That May Never Get A Live-Action Debut
Clearly, given that the artwork is from a fan, this doesn’t mean anything official, but it’s wonderful to imagine the possibilities. Withboth Venom and Spider-Man 2099 having appeared in Sony films recently, these anti-heroes are at the forefront of people’s imaginations. Venom is easily the most popular symbiote and alien rival to the famous web-slinger, andSpider-Man 2099 is relatively less well known, but his appearance inAcross the Spider-Verseensured he was recognizable.
Our Take On The Spider-Man 2099 Vs Venom Art
Venom Needs Another Chance To Shine In The SSU
Considering the wider possibilities for the future of the SSU, and especially the Spider-Verse, it does feel as though theseanimated films can explore an endless number of topics, variants and characters related to Spider-Man. The animation makes it more straightforward to simply draw, animate and include a variety of characters without finding the perfect actor to play the part in live-action. They can also introduce the entire spectrum of the Spider-Verse, so why not Venom?
Should Spider-Man have appeared in Venom: The Last Dance?
Despite some teases, Spider-Man is not in Venom: The Last Dance. While I still want to see Tom Holland’s Spider-Man fight Tom Hardy’s Venom somehow, I’m glad that the character was not in the movie. The final Venom film was a fun adventure, but far from a great movie. As such, I believe that Spider-Man would not have been properly serviced in Venom: The Last Dance, so it was for the best that Peter Parker did not add to the film’s many moving parts.
Venom’s apparent final foray in the SSU was marked byVenom: The Last Dance, and while that movie clearly leaves the door open for future stories to be told, the Spider-Verse has the potential to bring Venom back next. Spider-Man 2099 is not necessarily a bad guy, he just firmly believes that Miles Morales cannot avoid an imminent disaster in his timeline. Otherwise, he does not view Morales as a true spider-variant. Butif Venom were to play a part in an upcoming title, it could be agreat opportunity to have Spider-Man 2099 and Venom brawl it out.
