Summary

Slow Horsesboss Will Smith discusses the chances of adapting all nine novels written by Mick Herron. Originally premiering in April 2022, the AppleTV+ show adapts the Herron’s Slough House novel series which centers around a bunch of MI5 rejects who are thrust into administrative purgatory following a case of gross incompetence at their previous jobs. Veteran actor Gary Oldman leads thecast ofSlow Horses, and he’s joined by other stars like Jack Lowden, Saskia Reeves, Rosalind Eleazar, and Kristen Scott Thomas.

Now, in a recent interview withThe Hollywood Reporterahead of the highly anticipatedSlow Horsesseason 4,Smith reveals that the possibility of adapting all of Herron’s books from the Slough House book series is largely dependent on what Apple wants. He adds that he’s more inclined to leave fans wanting more rather than outstaying their welcome, but at the end of the day, he’s not the one to make the decision. Read his full comments below:

Slow Horses cast side by side in a gallery looking serious

“Yeah. I think Mick is writing the ninth now, but we’ll have to see what happens. Depends on what Apple wants and what the appetite is, but I definitely have the kind of leave-them-wanting-more rather than the outstay-your-welcome instinct … But the world of the show is there to be mined. Mick has written a terrific book called The Secret Hours, which is a sort of sidebar book that fills in the backstory of Lamb, and he brings in all these other existing characters. It’s a wonderful book that I think there’s definitely an opportunity to do a shorter-run [series] or a film or something. I know Gary wants to keep going for as long as he’s asked. He loves playing the character.”

Slow Horse Has Adapted Four Of Mick Herron’s Books So Far

The first season ofSlow Horsesadapted Herron’s eponymous first book and those episodes received rave reviews and earmarked the series as one of the current top spy thrillers on television. Season 2 adapted Herron’s 2013 follow-upDead Lions, while season 3 adapted the third novel titledReal Tigers.Slow Horsesseason 4continues to follow Herron’s books chronologically as it is set to take inspiration fromSpook Street, the fourth entry in the Slough House book series.

Slow Horseshas already been confirmed for season 5, and it is expected that it will adapt the fifth book in Herron’s series, titledLondon Rules. However, it will be interesting to see how the series proceeds after season 5. While the show is currently still one of Apple’s top shows, adaptations of this nature can become tricky, especially in the long run and, as Smith rightly pointed out, it might be better to bow out while the hype is loudest.
