Warning! This post contains SPOILERS for Darth Maul: Black, White & Red #4

Summary

In theStar Warscanon,Darth Maulhas revealed a dark truth about his Sith meditations. A technique not restricted to either side of the Force, the Jedi Order would meditate to center themselves and find peace in the Force. While the Sith also meditated on the dark side to gain renewed focus and clarity for their sinister plots and schemes, Maul has proved that great bloodshed was the cost of his own successful meditation.

Sent to a remote Sith temple by his master to achieve “stillness and quiet”, Sidious' apprentice was meant to dwell on a Sith’s need for stealth and strategy beyond brute strength andMaul’s impressive double-bladed lightsaber skillsalone. As seen at the end ofDarth Maul: Black, White & Red #4by Greg Pak, Luca Pizzari, and Will Sliney, Palpatine arrives to check on his apprentice’s progress. However, what he finds doesn’t seem to be what he had in mind for Maul’s critical lesson beforeThe Phantom Menace:

Palpatine Find Maul Meditating Black, White, And Red #4

Although Maul is found still and quiet with controlled rage as Sidious had instructed, it only came at the expense of the decimated settlement in the background with several dead bodies.Maul had unleashed his rage upon the beings near the Sith temple, despite his mission being to achieve stillness and quiet to control his intense aggression.

Darth Maul Sought To Attain Stillness and Quiet

No Matter The Cost…

WhileMaul initially began working toward controlling his great impatience and rageat this Sith temple in this new issue, the quiet was much harder to find thanks to this nearby settlement. Enraged by a dispute between the town’s corrupt mayor and its residents, Maul murdered the mayor to finally bring quiet to the area. However, things only got worse thanks to the interruptions of a pirate prince and his hunting party.

Brutally murdering the party only brought the prince’s father and his men to search for his missing son whom Maul executed. As such, Maul’s only option was seemingly to massacre the entire band of pirates, resulting in the burning remains of the settlement and all the bodies for Palpatine to find when he eventually arrives at the issue’s end.At least in Maul’s case, bringing about stillness and quiet for the sake of his Sith meditation required him to unleash the full extent of his rage, the exact thing his master wanted him to better control.

Darth Maul Indeed Achieved Stillness and Quiet

Though Not Without Spilling Lots of Blood

Darth Maul eventually got what he needed to meditate on the dark side and help focus his vast stores of rage. However, the irony is plain to see. Even Palpatine finds the results amusing, seemingly relishing all the carnage his apprentice is capable of.

That said, the true irony is thatDarth Maul eventually becomes a rival to Palpatine as seen inThe Clone Wars.Gaining his own power and influence over the galaxy’s underworld, Maul ends up turning his great rage upon his master after being rejected by Sidious in the wake of hisPhantom Menacedefeat. At any rate,it’s darkly fascinating to see this younger Darth Maul having corrupted one of the Jedi’s most innocent techniques with so much bloodshedin this new issue.

Darth Maul

Palpatine’s apprentice, Darth Maul was nothing more than a tool to winnow down the ranks of the Jedi ahead of Darth Sidious' true plans. Discarded after he was defeated by Obi-Wan Kenobi on Naboo, Darth Maul swore revenge against all those he blamed for his past struggles - Jedi and Sith alike. Maul tended to operate within the shadows, running various syndicates, and even established himself as a true rival for Palpatine on at least one occasion. He was eventually killed by Obi-Wan in a duel on Tatooine.
