Simon Kinberg is developing a new trilogy forStar Wars, which will include“brand-new characters and a new plot”– so will these beStar WarsEpisodes 10 – 12, or not? As the current list ofStar Wars' upcoming cinematic projectsare all individual movies, the news thatStar Wars Rebelsco-creatorSimon Kinberg is developing an entirely newStar Warstrilogyis an interesting prospect.Deadlineinitially reportedthat Kinberg’sStar Warsmovies are meant to be a direct continuation of the Skywalker saga.
According toThe Hollywood Reporter, however, Kinberg’s movies are“not meant to be a continuation of the Skywalker saga … The intent here is to have brand-new characters and a brand-new story, and not have it be a continuation, according to sources.”The writer ofThe Hollywood Reporter’s account, Borys Kit, has subsequently taken to social media to reiterate thatTHR’s sources confirm that Kinberg’s new trilogy will not be Episodes 10-12. Without official word from Lucasfilm and Disney, and no real word on the story or the characters involved, it’s hard to tell which report to believe.

Star Wars' Future Is Taking Shape
In any case,Star Wars’ cinematic future is finally beginning to take shape. WithThe Mandalorian & Groguhaving reportedly finished filming, andJames Mangold’sDawn of the Jediset to transport viewers to an era of unexploredStar Warshistory, Lucasfilm seems intent on trying to broaden its horizons while building on the familiar (and the popular). The news of Kinberg’sStar Warstrilogy has interesting timing, though. Recently, Daisy Ridley, who will be returning to headline her own Rey-centric movie, tentatively known asNew Jedi Order, said her movie’s andLucasfilm’s plans were“evolving,”and implied that other projects were in the works. Presumably, she was referencing Kinberg.
The Mandalorian & Groguis set to be released on June 11, 2025.

It’s possiblewhatever changesNew Jedi Ordermay be experiencing are tied to Kinberg’s upcomingStar Warstrilogy. If, asDeadlinereports, the movies are meant to be Episodes 10-12, the Rey movie may act as a lead-in for those films, continuing the Skywalker saga beyond Rey’s creation of a new Jedi Academy. However, it’s hard to know for sure. In all likelihood, eager audiences will have to wait for more information untilStar WarsCelebration 2025, set to take place in April in Japan.
Our Take On Simon Kinberg’s Star Wars Trilogy
Whether this new trilogy is meant to continue the Skywalker saga or not,the studio committing to a new three-part project is exciting. It proves that Lucasfilm has faith in Kinberg’s vision and the brand itself. If the trilogy expands on the ideas presented in the sequel trilogy, those movies may be seen in a new light, and if it’s a completely new story, asTHRclaims, then it’s a chance for Lucasfilm to do something truly original and unique, with lasting implications for the franchise. Either way, audiences will (hopefully) win. Kinberg’s work onStar Wars Rebels, which has had a massive influence onStar Wars' recent output, speaks for itself.

Since the divisive release ofStar Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, Lucasfilm’s theatrical slate has floundered, with many creators, writers, and directors coming and going. The four movies currently in development, which were announced atStar WarsCelebration 2023, are all still in the works. If Simon Kinberg’sStar Warsmovies get the same treatment at SWC in 2025, it’ll be safe to say Lucasfilm is serious about the new trilogy.
