Scrubscreator Bill Lawrence confirms that the revival won’t retcon season 9. After years of speculation, it was recently confirmed that aScrubsrevivalis moving ahead at ABC and 20th Television. Though it’s still early in the process, original cast members such as Zach Braff, Donald Faison, John C. McGinley, and potentially others are expected to reprise their roles in some capacity.

In the latest update, Lawrence tellsTVLinethatthe revival won’t retcon and erase the events ofScrubsseason 9— which focused on a largely new group of characters. In the quote below, the series creator praised that last season and mentioned that he would like to see some of the actors in that season reprise their roles. He also teased that the upcoming episodes will introduce new interns:

Why Scrubs season 9 reboot such a failure

I thought some of those actors and actresses were really starting to find their footing. Kerry Bishé, [Michael] Mosley, Dave Franco… they’re all still working for a reason. They’re all very good. I’m not against seeing those people [again], and I think it would be fun to have one of them zip by, but that spinoff, if you remember, was supposed to be a med school, and those people that were going through it would then go off into the world and land as physicians in places here, there, everywhere. What I think we will really be focusing on is a place where some of our core regulars still work as physicians. And who are the new interns or residents at that hospital?

Scrubs Season 9 Explained & What It Means For The Revival

It Has Significant Implications

Scrubsseason 9 is a bit divisive, in part because of the circumstances that brought it about. The medical dramedyhad a complicated change late in its run, moving from NBC to ABC and nullifying theplannedScrubsending. The ninth installment of the series featured a different focusand location. Faison and McGinley were the only ones who remained as series regulars, although most of the originals did make guest appearances.

Judy Reyes, who played Carla Espinosa, did not return forScrubsseason 9but she’s reportedly factored into the revival.

As Lawrence mentions, the focus went to a new group of young hopefuls, played by Dave Franco, Eliza Coupe, Michael Mosley, and Kerry Bishé who’d taken over the lead role. The attempts to shift the spotlight of the series did not work andScrubsseason 9 ultimately ended up being the show’s last.

Scrubs: Why The Season 9 Reboot Was A Failure

After a good run of eight seasons and a solid finale, Bill Lawrence’s medical sitcom Scrubs returned for a doomed ninth and pointless chapter

Lawrence, who is currently promoting season 2 of his Apple TV+ comedyShrinking, promises that the new series will have more of a spotlight on the original characters without ignoring the events of that last season. That means, among other things, the revival will honor the fact thatthe central Sacred Heart Hospital was demolished. It also leaves the door open to potential cameos from Franco and others.

Our Take On The Scrubs Revival Avoiding A Retcon

Other Shows Have Tried It

RoseanneandWill & Graceare both among the relatively recent revivals that opted to wave away their original series finales in one way or another. Whether or not the opposite approach works forScrubslargely depends on how much audiences still want to catch up with JD, Turk, and the rest of the show’s familiar faces all these years later. As enough time has passed since season 9, it could be interesting for the reboot to revisit some of those later characters.
