Resident Alienseason 3 brilliantly changed the show, and it needs to stick with its decision when the next run of episodes is released. Althoughit looked for a while as though Alan Tudyk’s sci-fi dramedy wouldn’t be renewed, USA Network inherited the show from Syfy andResident Alienseason 4 is now officially on the way. With Tudyk coming back to lead theResident Aliencast, the show is likely to continue on its strong trajectory. Hopefully, one of the biggest alterations made ahead ofResident Alienseason 3will remain in place as the saga continues.

AlthoughResident Aliengot off to a relatively slow start in terms of popularity, the arrival of seasons 1 and 2 on Netflix early in 2024 quickly boosted the show’s profile as it immediately made its way to the platform’s most-watched list. Part of the speculation thatResident Alienseason 3 would be the last came from Syfy’s decision to slash the episode count to just eight after the previous two runs had been substantially longer. Although season 3 wasn’t quite as good as past efforts, the final installments from Syfy did do one thing incredibly well.

Kate’s baby being abducted was never played for laughs

Resident Alienbegan in 2021, and the show expertly blended comedic elements with dramatic storylines from the very beginning. The balance ofResident Alien’s two sides has often been in flux, but the zanier moments have generally tended to take priority. However,Resident Alienseason 3 resisted its comedic instincts much moreand introduced some shockingly dark arcs for certain characters.

Resident Alien Season 3 Gives Harry 1 Brutal Off-Screen Moment That Reveals A Harsh Truth About His Character

Resident Alien’s Harry Vanderspeigle has long been the show’s hero, but the season 3 finale proves he hasn’t always acted with such virtue.

Of course,Resident Alienseason 3 didn’t completely abandon its jokes, but plots like the baby of Kate Hawthorne (Meredith Garretson) being continually abducted without its mother’s knowledge were incredibly upsetting. Although Kate was blissfully unaware of it happening when she wasn’t aboard theGrey Alien’sStar Wars-esque moon ship, the scenes that showed how distraught she was when begging the nefarious extraterrestrials to let her baby come home felt like they were from a different show completely. Although it felt a little out of character forResident Alienat first, it quickly became one of the most compelling storylines.

Resident Alien’s Darker Moments Enhance The Show’s Comedic Scenes

Alan Tudyk & his Resident Alien costars always stop the show from getting too macabre

Resident Alienalmost never goes for shock value. Everything that features in the show is directly related to the plot, and if it’s not, then it’s simply fulfilling a secret comedy quota. While certain shows may include dark scenes simply for dramatic effect,Resident Alienhas the added advantage of giving the audience emotional whiplash by making them laugh just a few moments later.Resident Alienisn’t the only show that can pull this off, but it’s certainly one of the projects that does it the best.

What makes these moments even better is that theResident Aliencharacters are rarely actually trying to be funny.

Just as the more macabre storylines highlight the show’s irreverent humor, the opposite is also true. The more intense the moment is, the better chance a joke has of landing when it just appears out of the blue. What makes these moments even better is that theResident Aliencharacters are rarely actually trying to be funny. For instance,Harry still hasn’t acclimatized to humanity’s social conventions, so his reading the room incorrectly has the potential to take the scene in almost any direction.

How Resident Alien Season 3’s Cliffhanger Finale Perfectly Set Up A Darker Season 4

Harry & the others are all very far from safety

Resident Alienseason 3’s endingleaves pretty much every member of the main cast in a precarious position. As well as Harry being trapped aboard the Greys' ship, Max and Sahar come face to face withResident Alienseason 4’s new villain - the Mantid. The show’s last-minute bad guy doesn’t have an enormous role in the season 3 finale, but he still gets the chance to display his ability and willingness to commit cold-blooded murder out of nowhere. So, he will be a major threat going forward.

9 Biggest Resident Alien Season 4 Theories That Could Actually Happen

Elements of Resident Alien season 4’s story are relatively easy to predict, but some of the upcoming events require a bit more conjecture than most.

What makes the Mantid especially dangerous is his ability to shapeshift, so he can appear as anyone he wants, and with Max presumably as his prisoner, there’s almost no one who can detect the Mantid with a glance. That being said, the comeback of Terry O’Quinn as the Alien Tracker offers some hopefor bringing down the Mantid, even if O’Quinn’s character will first need to process the trauma of being heavily augmented with government tech against his will - which will be another brilliantly dark arc forResident Alienseason 4 to explore.
