While it’s somewhat disappointing, given his all-consuming vengeance quest that previously was so intense,he couldn’t help but feel horrific guilt at the idea of a happy, normal life.Aqua deserves happiness, and he realizes this as he takes Kana out to dinner while pondering his feelings for Akane.
The result is an episode featuring a spectrum of Kana’s neuroses as she, understandably, obsesses over the mixed messages and whether Aqua has feelings for her instead. His actions suggest a high attentiveness to her while they’re out together and even as they return to their respective homes,but Aqua mentions he must also sort out his feelings for Akane. This results in a tense moment on the bridge and a reference to when Aqua rescues Akane, as he considers breaking up with her, only for her to make a compelling case.
