Warning! This post contains minor spoilers for The Dragon Prince.
Netflix’s underrated fantasy showThe Dragon Princeis sadly concluding on December 19th, coming to an end with its seventh and final season after 6 absolutely brilliant seasons over the last six years. The Dragon Princepremiered on August 14th, 2018, and introduced main characters Ezran, Callum, Rayla, and Claudia, who remain some ofThe Dragon Prince’sbest characters. At first, it seemed as though Rayla, a Moonshadow Elf—one of the manyelf races inThe Dragon Prince—was going to be a major antagonist in the show, as she was after Callum and Ezran’s father, King Harrow.
The dynamics of the show ended up being much more complicated than that, however, particularly when Ezran, Callum, and Rayla end up on a mission together, trying to get the last dragon egg known to exist back to its mother. That original story in the pilot episode has expanded considerably in the years and seasons since, incorporating a number of magical beings, brand-new characters, villains, and shocking story developments. The Dragon Princehas more than proven itself as a fantasy show, making it so disappointing that the show is officially coming to an end.

The Dragon Prince Is Astonishingly Good
This Fantasy Show Is Incredibly Underrated
BecauseThe Dragon Princeis an animated show and is in part targeted at children, older audiences may be quick to dismiss it. However, that would be a mistake. Yes,The Dragon Princemight appeal to a younger demographic for a host of reasons, but its fantasy elements and complexities make it suitable for a wide range of viewers.

As mentioned,The Dragon Prince’spilot episode introduced many characters and covered significant ground in terms of world-building. The show quickly establishes that the world is effectively divided into a magical realm, Xadia, and the human kingdoms. King Harrow’s kingdom, Katolis, is the primary human land shown in the show, although there are others. Unfortunately,Xadia and the human kingdoms are entirely separated from one another, as humans and magical beings (especially dragons) have been engaged in violent confrontations for generations.
In more recent seasons, a truly terrifying villain named Aaravos has also emerged, raising the stakes that much more. Based on these thematic elements,The Dragon Princereally is compelling to older audiences as well as to kids, and it fits into the larger fantasy genre perfectly. The most recent seasons had also indicated that so much more was coming inThe Dragon Prince, making it fairly surprising (and disappointing) that the show actually has just one more season.

Fans Of Lord Of The Rings Need To Catch Up On This Underrated Fantasy Series Before It Ends
One of Netflix’s beloved fantasy shows is approaching its final season, and it’s an ideal watch for fans of Lord of the Rings and The Rings of Power.
Season 7 Will Be The Dragon Prince’s Last—And That Feels Too Soon
The Show Still Has So Much Ground To Cover
The plot ofThe Dragon Princehas become more elaborate, especially in recent seasons. Romantic tensions and relationships have developed for multiple key characters, many of which are quite complicated, and entire wars have broken out, some of them even involving in-fighting. There are also a number of concerns about Callum’s use of magic, the continual threat of Aaravos (who seems to be invincible), and the trajectory of Claudia’s story. It’s difficult to imagine how just one more season will wrap everything up.
The plot ofThe Dragon Princehas become more elaborate, especially in recent seasons.
This could also continue a troubling trend seen in the most recent seasons of the show. Seasons 1 and 2 ofThe Dragon Princewere among the show’s best, in part because they were so meticulously crafted. The pacing was such that the show took its time developing characters, establishing background stories, and revealing the complexities of this expansive world. More recent seasons have not followed that original winning formula, though, which could spell trouble for season 7, especially asThe Dragon Prince’slast.
How Will The Dragon Prince Wrap Up Every Storyline?
The Show Has Proven Itself So Far, So Hopefully It Will Stick The Landing
While this ending does feel rather sudden,The Dragon Princehas proven itself as an excellent show, so it’s possible the writers will pull off a conclusion to the story, even with all its complexities. Givenhow powerful Aaravos is, presumably, most of the plot will consist of the main heroes' efforts to stop the terrifying Startouch Elf. However, viewers have largely been endeared to the show because of the main characters, especially Ezran, Callum, and Rayla.
Hopefully,The Dragon Princegives the three heroes, as well as various other key characters, the ending they deserve—but without making it feel too obvious or clean-cut. It will be a difficult goodbye either way, but ifThe Dragon Princesticks the landing, it will at least lessen some of the disappointment that the show is now over. The Dragon Princeis a truly underrated show, and while it’s a shame to see it go, it will be fascinating to see how the epic saga concludes.
