It’s been one year sinceAhsokagraced screens and enamoredStar Warsenthusiasts with its storytelling, but there’s one retcon that changes the ending ofStar Wars Rebelseven more than previously thought. For manyRebelslovers,Ahsokaseason 1 felt like a continuation of the animated show. Most ofRebels’main charactersappeared inAhsokaseason 1, and the show built off of different storylines set up inRebelsseason 4.

Despite how greatAhsokawas, it sometimes feels like it is encroaching on the ending ofRebels. The series ends withEzra Bridgersacrificing himself so that he can save his family and his home world of Lothal by havingpurrgil space whalestake him andGrand Admiral Thrawn’s troops away from the planet, going to an undisclosed destination. It was impliedSabine Wrenbelieved that Ezra survived the journey and was going off with Ahsoka Tano to find the missing Jedi. However, whenAhsoka’s first few episodes came out, it retconned Sabine Wren’s ending fromRebels.

Sabine Didn’t Just Stay On Lothal To Protect The Planet

The Rebels Finale Implied Sabine Stayed on Lothal For Ezra

It was implied in theRebelsseries finalethat Sabine Wren remained on Lothal after the Liberation of Lothal to honor Ezra Bridger and protect the planet in case the Empire ever came back. However,Ahsokareveals thatthe real reasonSabine remained on Lothal was so she could begin her Jedi training with Ahsoka Tano. While it’s a bit easier to believe that Sabine remained by herself on Lothal during the Galactic Civil War, it’s much harder to believe that Ahsoka would’ve stayed with her when they could’ve been getting involved with the Rebellion and making a difference.

9 Ways Ahsoka Retconned Star Wars Rebels' Epilogue

Some shifts in the timeline of events have forced the Ahsoka show to retcon certain parts of Star Wars Rebels' epilogue. Here’s what we know.

Sabine and Ahsoka may have gone on missions for the Rebellion to help out, especially sinceHera Syndulla, a general in the Rebellion, knew the interpersonal dynamics between Ahsoka and Sabine. InAhsokaseason 1, Hera seemed to understand why Sabine and Ahsoka had a falling out and stopped Sabine’s Jedi training. In fact, Hera encouraged both women to take another crack at their master and apprentice relationship. However, this still rewrites much of what we knew of what Sabine did after Lothal’s liberation. While it doesn’t necessarily break canon,it feels like an out-of-character change that wasn’t necessary.

Star Wars Keeps Retconning Rebels' Ending

These Characters Deserve Better Than Constant Retcons

TheRebelsfinale was beloved by many because of how it connected the end of these character’s stories with the largerStar Warsgalaxy. However, sinceAhsokacame out, the epilogue ofRebelshas been retconned multiple times. The final scene between Ahsoka and Sabine has been changed, with Ahsoka now wearing gray instead of white. Other aspects have also changed, likeJacen Syndulla’s physical appearance.

However, this sets a dangerous precedent thatStar Warscan and will retcon other titles if it means furthering a different story.

In the grand scheme of things, these retcons aren’t a big deal, especially ifAhsokacontinues to be good. However, this sets a dangerous precedent thatStar Warscan and will retcon other titles if it means furthering a different story. A memory of one show should not suffer to make another one work. Hopefully, moving forward, Dave Filoni and his team will be more careful about retconning aspects of shows likeRebelsfor other shows likeAhsokato succeed.
