Hippolyta’s gelatinous form is riddled with open lacerations, offering a horrifying view of her internal organs.

Wonder Woman Dead Earth #2 Hippolyta

Daniel Warren Johnson and Mike Spicer’sWonder Woman: Dead Earthseriesremains one of my all-time favorite comics featuring the Amazon Princess. However, it’s not for the faint of heart. The story begins with Diana awakening from a centuries-long sleep to find her friends long gone and Earth reduced to a wasteland overrun by mutated creatures.

In her quest to uncover what happened to the planet she once vowed to protect, Wonder Woman returns to Themyscira, leading a group of humans in search of sanctuary. Tragically,Diana soon discovers that her beloved mother has become one of these grotesque mutants.

Wonder Woman’s Mother Turns Into Mutated Monster That Is All Kinds of WRONG

Hippolyta’s mutated form is nothing short of sickening. While her face and upper torso retain the timelessbeauty of an Amazon, everything below her waist is a nightmare. Her legs have been replaced by a massive, slug-like lower half that looms over Diana. This grotesque transformation defies easy description, but the closest comparison would be a mass ofpink, fleshy folds draped over one another, adorned with what appear to be the white hair-like structures typically found on caterpillarsand other invertebrates. To make matters worse, her gelatinous form is riddled with open lacerations, offering a horrifying view of her internal organs, such as her intestines.

When I first saw the mutated Hippolyta, I wanted to forget it instantly, but I couldn’t stop staring—a true testament to Johnson’s brilliant artwork. What made the image even more sickening was that this wasn’t just some random beast roaming the Earth; it was Diana’s mother. The retention of Hippolyta’s human-like upper body only heightened the horror, compounding the emotional impact. The flashbacks throughout the story, showcasing Diana and her mother’s relationship, made this revelation even more hard-hitting and devastating.

How Did Hippolyta Become a Monstrously Mutated Villain Intent on Killing Humans?

Just when I thought Hippolyta’s transformation couldn’t be more devastating, Daniel Warren Johnson delivers another blow by revealing how Diana’s mother became this monstrous form. Grabbing Diana’s face, Hippolyta shows through visions and narration that“the humans [Diana] loves so much”bombed the Amazons“so hard and so many times, there was almost nothing left.”Because the Amazons are“of the Gods,”the bombs didn’t kill them—they mutated them. Hence, the beasts Diana has been killing are actually her mutated sisterswho have been hunting down humans in revenge. This shocking twist is one of the most devastating moments in aWonder Womanstory, which is why it resonates so deeply with me.

Wonder Woman

Wonder Woman is the superhero identity of Diana, Princess of the Amazons. Created on the island of Themyscira, Wonder Woman is a super-powered demi-goddess with extreme physical strength who utilizes magical gifts (like her famous Lasso of Truth) to defeat her foes. As mighty as her fellow heroes Superman and the Justice League, Wonder Woman is unmatched in her compassion and virtue.
