This excitingMagnetocosplay skillfully the character’s classic design with theUltimate X-Menversion of the character’s powers, evoking the edgy alternative continuity that reshaped Marvel Comics in the early 2000s.Magneto’s powers have always looked amazing, anda terrific new cosplay has brought the Master of Magnetism and his powers to life in a look that combines multiple different versions of the character.

As shared on Instagram, Cosplayer Jimmy W. (@jcw.cosplay) – in collaboration with several members of the cosplay community – has made the perfect build of Magneto, combining the Master of Magnetism’s familiar aesthetic with the visual depiction of his Ultimate Universe counterpart’s powers.

The look is an exciting cosplay in general, but of particular note is this effective synthesis of two versions of the character, showing how multiple designs can influence one fan re-creation of Magneto. Longtime fans of theX-Menfranchise especially are certain to appreciate this cosplay “remix,” so to speak.

Magneto’s powers have had many different looks over time. On the iconic cover to the very first issue ofX-Men, his powers were represented by concentric lines of energy emanating from him. By the time ofX-Men(Vol. 2) #1,which homages that original cover, the power was now denoted by spiky pink and white outlines. As mentioned,JCW’s cosplay power signature closely resembles that of Ultimate Magneto, introduced in the early-2000s. This design eschewed spiky pink in favor of magnetic pulse-esque blue, a trend which carried over to other magnetic characters in the series, including the heroic Syndicate.

Magneto’s villainy reached a peak in the eventUltimatum, for many the epitome of mid-2000s edginess at Marvel, when he flipped the world’s magnetic poles.

Ultimate Magneto presents a fascinating contrast to his mainline Earth-616 counterpart.Classic Magneto has fluctuated between heroism and villainyover the decades, depending on the writer, and the editorial edict at the time, while Ultimate Magneto was always a villain from the jump. Magneto’s villainy reached a peak in the eventUltimatum, for many theepitome of mid-2000s edginess at Marvel, when he flipped the world’s magnetic poles, causing widespread natural disasters that killed many major heroes. This was, however, his last stand, asUltimateCyclops brutally made sure that Magneto would never return.

Magneto’s Power Color Is A Vital Aspect Of The Character’s Storytelling

A Critical Detail For Cosplayers To Emphasize

Magneto’s powers are now distinctively blue, contrasting with not just his red outfit, but also his different costumes in shades of black, white, and gray which he’s worn.

Magneto’s blue power signature is also a useful lesson in how to distinguish characters using color;not only does the power contrast well with the red tones of his costume, but it also separates his power from others. In particular, telekinetic power signatures in the X-Men are often shaded pink and are most often used by heroes. Magneto’s signature both makes his powers more distinct, but also presents a deliberate contrast with these heroes. It’s an inversion of the usual idea that blue is a color reserved for heroes.

X-Men: Rogue & Magneto’s Romantic “Lost Story” To Finally Be Told in New Comic

A new Marvel Comics miniseries is set to explore the “lost story” of Magneto and Rogue’s romance, from iconic author Chris Claremont’s Uncanny X-Men.

This look has worked so well that the blue power signature has since been adopted by mainline Magneto since the early 2000s, concurrently withUltimate X-Men. While it doesn’t share the exact magnetic wave shape unique to his Ultimate counterpart, Magneto’s powers are now distinctively blue, contrasting with not just his red outfit, but also his different costumes in shades of black, white, and gray which he’s worn in recent years. WithMagnetocurrently in a new red outfitdesigned by Ryan Stegman inX-Men (2024), it remains unclear what his powers will look like, but one can only hope it’ll be as cool as JCW’s cosplay.

JCW is imposing and regal in red and magenta as the Master of Magnetism himself, as his powers glow in his hand. The editing and photography itself is provided by @the_flemingphotos, who pushes JCW’s look to the next level. The cosplay itself is also a team effort. The helmet is created by @xdprops, while the shinguards and belt are by @friscocosplay. Finally, the red undersuit is by @supergeek_designs_costumes.
