Summary
Cleo’s big twist inLady in the Lakeepisode 6 reveals that she actually was not killed by Stephan, Reggie, or anyone at all. In the penultimate episode of the new Apple murder mystery period piece,Cleo Johnson (Moses Ingram) turns up in the final sceneto reveal to Maddie Schwartz (Natalie Portman) that she is in fact alive. This comes as a massive surprise to Maddie, who had gone to extreme lengths trying to dig into the truth aboutCleo Johnson’s mysterious disappearanceand murder. Maddie tried to find connections to the vicious murder of Tessie Durst, the 11-year-old daughter of her ex-boyfriend, Alan (David Corenswet).
The end ofLady in the Ladyepisode 5leftMaddie bleeding on the floor at Stephan’s mother’s house, which led to the police and press realizing that Stephan was not guilty of the murders of Tessie Durst or Cleo Johnson, as was suspected. While Stephan still tried to sexually assault Tessie and does not deserve to be let out of prison,the press and police are forced to reopen the case about Cleo Johnson’s murder, which leads to her husband Slappy’s (Byron Bowers) unjust arrest. The most shocking part ofLady in the Lakeseason 6 arrives in its final moments as Maddie wakes up from a dream in her hospital bed to discover the actual Cleo Johnson standing over her. Maddie had been going in and out of dreams throughout the episode, which stylistically looked at central key characters such as Reggie, Ferdie, and Cleo through interpretive dances and musical numbers. In one of Maddie’s dreams, Cleo was dressed as a nurse and was present as Maddie gave birth to a baby that was covered in newspapers,symbolizing how Cleo’s death gave birth to Maddie’s journalism career.
Another one of Maddie’s dreams sees her diving into a lake and pulling Cleo up to the surface, saving her without a second of hesitation. This is one of teh last things she dreams before she faces the real Cleo who is dressed as a nurse in her hospital room, just like in one of her previous dreams. This time, however, Maddie is not dreaming, andCleo is discovered to have faked her own disappearance and death in order to presumably get out of Baltimorewith the money she had won from Shell’s rigged lottery. Even though Reggie was shown dumping a body into a lake, it turns out that the body was not Cleo’s.

Did Reggie Help Fake Cleo’s Death In Lady In The Lake?
Reggie could have been the only one who knew Cleo was alive
Through six episodes ofLady in the Lake, it has yet to be revealed exactly how Cleo was able to pull off the feat of faking her own death. Considering, however, that Cleo had originally planned the scheme with Reggie, it’s likely that Reggie is in on it and is the only person who knows that Cleo is actually alive. Perhaps Slappy, Cleo’s sons and mother also know the truth about Cleo’s whereabouts, but none of this has been confirmed yet in the series. Now that Cleo is revealed to be alive, it completely changes how the viewer looks at Reggie’s suspicious behaviors,realizing that he was likely trying to protect Cleo the whole time.
The most viable option is that rather than meeting up with Cleo to kill her on Christmas Eve like he told Shell, he actually staged Cleo’s death and gave her the resources to get her out of Baltimore.A big missing link in the entire mystery thus far is what happened to Dora Carter(Jennifer Mogbock), who was said to have left Shell’s club to pursue a bigger spotlight but hasn’t been heard from since Cleo’s “death” at the end ofLady in which Lake episode 4, which is exactly when Reggie was shown to have dumped “Cleo’s” body into teh lake. It could very well be that Reggie dumped Dora’s body into the lake, perhaps after a drug overdose.

A similar Cleo twist occurs in theLady in the Lakenovel, which was written by Laura Lippman.Cleo ends up assuming the identity of another characterand is also revealed to be alive by the end of the novel. While the twist in the Lady in the Lake series and novel are similar, there are many differences between the book and the series as well as several additional characters in the book that play no part in the TV adaptation. With only one episode remaining ofLady in the Laketitled “My Story”, it seems like the series finale is gearing up to explain exactly what happened to Cleo through her own eyes and voice.
