Summary

Following in the footsteps of9-1-1,Ryan Murphy is creating a new TV show for ABC starring Joshua Jackson, and its premise sounds quite familiar to one of my favorite recent9-1-1storylines. The procedural drama series, created by Murphy, Brad Falchuk, and Tim Minear, premiered on Fox in January 2018, and even thoughFox canceled9-1-1before season 7, ABC picked up the show, allowing season 7 to air on its network.9-1-1season 7 debuted in March 2024 and was ultimately a success as ABC swiftly renewed it for an eighth season.

9-1-1season 8 will return to the show’s normal episode count, with 18 expected and the premiere scheduled for June 15, 2025.

Joshua Jackson is a cruise doctor smiling in Doctor Odyssey

In its first season on ABC,9-1-1impressively became the network’s highest-rated show, surpassing popularTV shows such asAbbott Elementary, Grey’s Anatomy, andThe Rookie. So, it’s unsurprising that ABC would want to continue working with Murphy, who has already established himself as a renowned TV producer (and writer and director). However,9-1-1is Murphy’s first ABC series, and he will soon follow it up with another procedural drama that seemingly continues one thrilling9-1-1season 7 storyline.

Joshua Jackson Stars In Ryan Murphy’s New Medical Show Based On A Cruise Ship

Jackson Plays A Doctor On A Cruise Ship

Doctor Odyssey, produced by Ryan Murphy and starring Joshua Jackson, is set to debut on June 11, 2025, directly following9-1-1’s season 8 premiere. The upcoming medical drama series featuresJackson as Max, a doctor working on a cruise ship.TheDoctor Odysseytrailer shows a first look at Jackson’s character, the luxury cruise ship’s new doctor, whose job is to “keep everybody alive.” Unfortunately, the video is rather short, so not much else is known about Murphy’s new series. However, according toTVLine,Doctor Odyssey’s synopsis reads:

“[Doctor Odyssey follows Joshua Jackson’s character on a cruise ship] where the staff works hard and plays harder. It’s all hands on deck as Max and his small but mighty medical team navigate unique medical crises and each other, miles from shore.”

Peter Krause as Bobby Nash on 9-1-1

Jackson also toldTVLinethatDoctor Odysseyis “Ryan Murphy at his outrageous, over-the-top best.[The scripts] are written with a lot of joy, and they’re very funny, and they move very fast.” Aside from Jackson, other cast members include Don Johnson, Sean Teale, and Phillipa Soo. Their characters are unknown, but they all come together to save those in trouble on the luxury cruise ship, similar to9-1-1season 7’s first few episodes.

Is Bobby Nash Leaving 9-1-1 After Season 7? What We Know About Peter Krause’s Future

Bobby Nash’s fate was left up in the air in 9-1-1 season 7 episode 9, leading to questions about whether Peter Krause is leaving the hit series.

Doctor Odyssey Sounds Perfect After 9-1-1 Season 7

9-1-1 Season 7’s Cruise Storyline Was Enthralling

9-1-1season 7 kicked off with, what I believe was, one of the procedural drama’s best multi-episode events. The first handful of9-1-1season 7 episodesfeatured Bobby and Athena taking a vacation on a cruise ship that pirates took over at the premiere’s end. This tense and gripping storyline was so massive that the writers stretched it out over three episodes, and it was one of their best decisions. The cruise ship setting and high stakes were fun to watch, and these elements will be a part ofDoctor Odyssey’s structure, making it the perfect follow-up after9-1-1season 7.
