John Wick 5gets a new update from Chad Stahelski following some conflicting reports. After the franchise got its start back in 2014, Keanu Reeves returned as the titular assassin last year for the acclaimedJohn Wick: Chapter 4. The film was a massive hit for Lionsgate, and the company was quick to announce development on a fifth installment. Stahelski and Reeves, however, have been more measured in their responses regarding apotentialJohn Wick 5, and rumors that the film would start shooting in 2025 weredebunked byColliderearlier this year.
During a recent interview withBusiness Insiderin celebration of the firstJohn Wick’s 10th anniversary, Stahelski comments on his relationship to the franchise and what it would take to return for a fifth entry. Though the director affirms that both he and Reeves are open to returning forJohn Wick 5,he stresses that they will only do so if a strong enough story idea presents itself, and that hasn’t happened yet. Check out Stahelski’s comment below:

Stahelski: When you fall in love you fall in love. I’m in love with John Wick. I’m in love with the process and the story. Keanu and I are both like, if we wake up tomorrow and there’s a good idea, we’re doing it. you may bet your ass.
BI:Another “John Wick” movie?

Stahelski:Yeah. If we felt we weren’t ripping the fans off and had more to give, I’d do it tomorrow. I just don’t have that right now. The other stuff I’m working on are great properties, and I’m excited, but nothing is going to beat this.
What Stahelski’s Comment Means For John Wick 5
When Could A Fifth Movie Be Released?
TheJohn Wick: Chapter 4endingfeatures Wick seemingly dying from his wounds, but there are some subtle teases that he remains alive when the credits start to roll. This possibility is evidently what a fifth film could latch onto to continue the story, butStahelski’s comment would suggest that Wick’s story getting another chapter isn’t as much of a sure thing as Lionsgate initially suggested. There’s a chance, then, that, aside from his upcoming cameo in theBallerinaspinoff movie, audiences have seen the last of Reeves' iconic assassin.
When Ballerina Takes Place In The John Wick Timeline
Ana de Armas' spinoff movie Ballerina expands the John Wick universe, and when it takes place in the franchise timeline is officially confirmed.
IfJohn Wick 5does happen, Stahelski’s latest update affirms that it won’t be arriving anytime soon. It’s not clear just how much effort is being put into developing the story for a fifth film at the moment, but the director has other projects currently on the go, notably aHighlanderremake starring Henry Cavill. If a strong idea does come to Stahelski, the script still needs to be written and schedules need to be figured out. At this point, the earliest audiences could expect a potentialJohn Wick 5is probably 2028.
Stahelshi has previously revealed that hisHighlanderremake is set to start filmingin early 2025.
Our Take On Stahelski’s John Wick 5 Update
Why It’s Good News
TheJohn Wickfranchise is one of the few franchises that actually seems to get better with each new installment. The fourth film is a masterclass in action cinema, and if it’s the last outing for Reeves' assassin, it’s certainly not a bad way to wrap up the story. That being said, it would be exciting to seeJohn Wick 5come together with both Stahelski and Reeves, and the director’s latest comment is a positive sign that it’ll be worth the wait if it does happen.
John Wick: Chapter 4reviewswere glowing and the film grossed over $440 million worldwide, butStahelski’s update suggests that they won’t make another movie just to make one. If the band gets back together for another action-packed outing, it will be because Stahelski has a strong vision for the story and the character, and that’s frankly how all sequels should be approached. For now, it looks like those hoping forJohn Wick 5will have to wait a while longer.
