Summary

Han So-hee currently stars inGyeongseong Creature, and I wish Netflix’s action-packed horror K-drama had given her more to do after watching her performance inMy Name. Between romantic shows likeNeverthelessand action webseries likeMy Name, Han So-hee has built a fascinating career. She is among the Korean actors who are dominating Netflix, having starred in two original series for the streamer already.Gyeongseong Creaturemarked Han So-ree’s second collaboration with the platform, but the series has yet to live up to her previous hit.

Gyeongseong Creatureseason 1 took place in 1945 during the final days of World War II. One of manyK-dramas set during Japan’s occupation of Korea, the show combined historical elements such as the Unit 731 experiments with a fictional storyline about monsters being created in a lab.Han So-hee’s Chae-okled the cast ofGyeongseong Creaturealongside Park Seo-joon’s Tae-sang, with both actors now returning for season 2. WhileGyeongseong Creaturedelivered cool visual effects and a scary monster, I was disappointed thatHan So-hee’s characterdid not get to do much in terms of the action.

There has been no shortage of incredible K-dramas in 2024, but some have defied expectations to become the year’s best shows in the genre.

Gyeongseong Creature Wasted Han So-hee As An Action Hero After My Name

Chae-ok Doesn’t Get Many Action Moments In Gyeongseong Creature

My Namewas a turning point for Han So-hee’s character not only because it was a leading role in a Netflix webseries but also because it allowed the star to be an action star. WhileMy Nameis a drama first and foremost, it also includes a lot of action, particularly after Ji-woo started training.A revenge K-drama,My Nametells the story of a young woman who joins the local mob so that she can avenge the death of her father. She becomes the mob’s mole inside the police, believing her father’s criminal associates will help her get revenge.

Ji-woo has to go from a regular student who just finished high school to a dangerous woman who can deal with the mob and the police, always at the risk of being caught. My Namegives Han So-hee a few great action scenes, my favorite being the ones where she is boxing.Gyeongseong Creature, on the other hand, fails to deliver on most of its promises.Chae-ok is a detective willing to do whatever it takes to find her mother, but there isn’t much to her investigation other than discovering the hospital and eventually realizing her mother is the monster.

Despite Its Flaws, Gyeongseong Creature Was A Great Next Role For Han So-hee

While I enjoyed the first season ofGyeongseong Creature, it was not as good as a big-budget K-drama starring Han So-hee and Park Seo-joon could have been. With such strong, popular lead actors, the Netflix horror show could have developed its characters and main couple a little more. That said,Gyeongseong Creaturewas a very interesting role for Han So-hee coming out ofSoundtrack 1. After a grounded action thriller and a contemporary romantic drama, Han So-hee starring in ahistorical K-dramawith elements of horror and science fiction sounded exciting.

Gyeongseong Creatureseason 2 releases in 2024.

Most ofGyeongseong Creatureis told from the perspective of Park Seo-joon’s character. Very little is revealed about Chae-ok’s past other than her mother disappeared without leaving any traces, which I hope will change in season 2. Although Park and Han have great chemistry on the show, the relationship between Tae-sang and Chae-ok is not properly developedand escalates too quickly. Still, Han So-hee gives a strong performance and conveys both the strength and the vulnerability of her character. My Nameremains my favorite of her K-dramas, butGyeongseong Creaturemade for an entertaining watch.

Han So-hee’s Character Might Be Very Different In Gyeongseong Creature Season 2

Gyeongseong Creature 2 Takes Place 79 Years After Season 1

Gyeongseong Creatureseason 1’s endingteased that the show was no longer going to be a period piece, which has since been confirmed.Gyeongseong Creature 2will take place in 2024, almost 80 years after the events of the first season. As shocked as I was to see Park Seo-joon’s character appear in a modern-day setting, I’m even more intrigued to learn what happened to Chae-ok. Whereas Park’s potentially new character is referred to as Ho-jae,Han So-hee is still playing Chae-ok as far as we know it despite the 79-year time skip.

Lieutenant Colonel Kato

Chae-ok died in theGyeongseong Creatureseason 1 finale but was brought back thanks to her mother, the creature, who transferred the Najin parasite onto her daughter. I assumed Chae-ok had developed a different form of the infection and, as a result, became immortal. Regardless of what is behind her return in season 2, I cannot wait to see Han So-hee play a character born in the 1920s but is still around in 2024. I’m also excited to see how her relationship with “Ho-jae” will play out. Hopefully, Chae-ok will shine more in season 2 than she did in season 1.
