Moriah Plath can sometimes get a bad rap onWelcome to Plathville, butI’ve changed my mind about Moriah’s villain-nesson the yet-to-be-announced next season.Moriah holds a special place in the hearts ofWelcome to Plathvillefans, as we’ve watched her grow up and evolve throughout the show’s six seasons. She’s relatable because she has good intentions, yetMoriah also contributes to her downfall regularly. Like a lot of other 22-year-olds, Moriah is misunderstood, butshe’s the heart and soul of the show,and without her, it wouldn’t be nearly as compelling.
I’ve done a rewatch ofWelcome to Plathvilleseason 6, andI’ve learned to root for Moriah. She’s sensitive, passionate, and creative, but she’s still young. She makes mistakes, and picks herself back up again. Moriah isn’t afraid to put herself out there, channeling her emotions into music and other creative endeavors. Considering her childhood and her stubborn nature, it’s completely normal that Moriah is still learning how to be a functioning adult.
Growing up in a conservative family,Moriah’s upbringing was sheltered, to say the least. Barry and Kim Plath raised their nine children away from the influence of the outside world. OnWelcome to Plathvilleseason 1, we watched as older kids experienced many “firsts”: first sip of soda, first alcoholic beverage. As the second eldest daughter, Moriah was just 16 when the show started, but her rebellious nature was already on full display with her style. Moriah yearned to free herself from the confines of her family farm, and she bargained with her parents to give her freedom.

They announced their shocking divorce in season 4, much to the surprise of fans and even their children. This is when I noticed howsimilarMoriah and Kim are. After Kim left Barry, she transformed her life by losing weight, wearing more provocative clothing, indulging in her passion for dance, and dating someone new.A rebellious Kim was hiding in plain sight, so we can see where Moriah gets it from.
Moriah and her older brother, Ethan Plath, expressed to their parents that they felt the way they were raised stifled them as adults. They’d never had proper schooling or participated in extracurricular activities, which they both felt held them back in the real world. Luckily, Moriah is never one to back down from a challenge, and she still spreads her wings as she ages into adulthood.

In addition to learning basic human functions,Moriah has also struggled in her romantic life. Again, not unlike a lot of other 22-year-olds out there! At 19, Moriah’s first kiss was on-screen with her then-boyfriend, Max Kallschmidt. Their romance was full of the stuff young love is made of: playfulness, exploration, and heavy emotions. Max broke Moriah’s heart when she revealed he cheated on her. Moriah let the viewers in on her pain by going through all the emotions on the show.

And they’re still there for her now as Moriah decided to take Matthew back. She’ll need a strong support system, as she’s proving she needs to learn this the hard way.

Moriah makes mistakes, but she owns up to them like she did when she apologized for some of the things she’d done to Olivia Plath, Ethan’s ex-wife.Moriah has good intentions, even if the execution is sometimes problematic.Here’s to hopefully watching her continue to figure things out should the show return for another season ofWelcome to Plathville.
