2024’sTwistersis a fitting legacy sequel to 1996’sTwister, introducing a whole new roster of characters to carry the torch of this newly-founded franchise into the future. One ofTwisters’best charactersis Glenn Powell’s Tyler, who steals the show with his signature charm and entertaining dynamics with the others. However, I’d wager that there’s more to his character thanTwistersinitially reveals, potentially heading towards a surprise connection to the original film.

AlthoughTwisters2hasn’t been confirmed, the film’s positive reception and successful run at the box office make it very likely thatUniversal Studios will want this franchise to continuein some way. If that’s going to be the case, introducing a connection to the previous movie would be a hugely effective way of bringing both generations together. It’s something we’ve seen with franchises likeJurassic ParkandGhostbusters, and I suspect thatTwistershas already sowed the seeds of making it happen.

Tyler’s Aunt He Mentions In Twisters Could Be Jami Gertz’s Melissa Reeves

There’s A Small Connection Between The Characters

In a small throwaway moment duringTwisters, Powell’s protagonist mentions that his aunt has an extreme fear of tornadoes. It’s a very small detail for the film to mention, and it doesn’t progress the story in any way, but there may be a reason for its inclusion; Tyler’s aunt could be Melissa Reeves, one of the main characters from 1996’sTwister. It may be a reach, but we know that Reeves is afraid of twisters from her dialogue and actions in the first movie.

Twisters' Sequel Has To Deliver On Scrapped Glen Powell & Daisy Edgar-Jones Moment

Kate and Tyler’s romance was teased throughout the original Twisters, and a potential Twisters sequel needs to pay this storyline off in a big way.

Perhaps Reeves moved to Arkansas following the traumatic events ofTwister, leaving Bill behind and spending time with her nephew. It would explain how Tyler developed his love for tornado-hunting, and creates a pathway forTwister’s original cast to return in the future. This small detailcould be the key to bringing the two generations togetherwithout too much of a commitment - if it doesn’t happen, this line can still exist on its own.

Jami Gertz Deserves To Return In A Twisters Sequel

The Character Faced Undeserved Backlash After Twister

Bringing Jami Gertz back forTwisters 2would be an excellent idea, and she would certainly bring a new dimension of fun to the sequel. It would be doubly effective sinceMelissa’s character was misunderstood inTwister, with many audiences simply hating the character because she stood in the way of the film’s central romance. But equally, many would agree that Melissa did nothing wrongand deserves another chance to shine.

It’s unclear whether any ofTwister’s original cast would be interested in returning for a future sequel, but if so, Melissa would be among the first characters I’d choose to bring back.

It’s unclear whether any ofTwister’s original cast would be interested in returning for a future sequel, but if so, Melissa would be among the first characters I’d choose to bring back. She was a strong figure whose fear of twisters gave her a uniquely complex role in the story, which would be fascinating to explore again - and making her Tyler’s aunt, as mentioned inTwisters, is the smoothest way of letting it happen.

A follow-up to the 1996 original film Twister, Twisters is a sequel set years after the original, said to be fast-tracked by Steven Spielberg and Mark L. Smith, with Frank Marshal as producer. Little details exist about the film, but Helen Hunt is expected to reprise her role as Jo, with the film likely to pay homage to the late Bill Paxton.
