One of my favorite movie-viewing memories as a kid has to be watching theBack to the Futuremovies with my brother. It was a Friday night in June, and my brother and I were exhausted from a grueling week of elementary school, so we decided to watch the firstBack to the Futuremovie. We were instantly hooked and wanted to continue, but unfortunately had an early bedtime. So the next day, instead of going out to play road hockey with our friends, my brother and I stayed in all afternoon to watch the second and thirdBack to the Futuremovies.
Most of the world agrees with my brother and I: the threeBack to the Futurefilms make up one of thebest movie trilogies of all time, and therefore should not be messed with. However,Robert Zemeckis, who directed all threeBack to the Futuremovies, has suggested that he wants to return to the franchise. In a twist, Zemeckis admitted that he actually really wants to see aBack to the Futuremusical movieget made. While he’s thrilled about the idea, I’m not sold.

Despite Strong Reviews For The Musical, A Movie Adaptation Does Not Need To Happen
In an age where so many classic movies are being remade, even when most people think it’s unnecessary, I admire Robert Zemeckis and co-writer/producer Bob Gale for being extremely protective over theBack to the FutureIP. Both Zemeckis and Gale have stressed that while they are alive, there will be not be aBack to the Futureremake or legacy sequel. However, they have given their approval for someBack to the Future-related projects, such as the musical stageplay.
While I haven’t had the pleasure of seeingBack to the Future: The Musical, the production has received nothing but great reviews. The musical adaptation first opened in London’s West End in 2021, before moving to Broadway in 2023. Having won the Laurence Olivier Award for Best New Musical in 2022,there is no doubt thatBack to the Future: The Musicalis amazing. However, I don’t think it would be received as well on the big screen, since many would just see the movie as an attempt for the studio to cash in on a beloved series.

Why Robert Zemeckis' Back To The Future Musical Idea Is Unlikely To Happen
Robert Zemeckis Thinks A Back To The Future Musical Movie Is A Great Idea
While one of the biggest movie studios in the world, Universal, would likely disagree with me that theBack to the Futuremusical movie would be a cash grab, they definitely agree that it doesn’tneedto happen.Zemeckis has revealed that he has pitched making anotherBack to the Futuremovie as a musical to Universal, with him wanting to act as a producer for the project, but admitted that “they don’t get it.”
Most would think that seeing Marty McFly, Doc Brown, and the DeLorean on the big screen again would entice Universal.
In a time where it feels like almost every proposed project about slightly popular IP is being greenlit,it is actually surprising that Universal wouldn’t want to jump at the chance at making aBack to the Futuremovie musical, especially if Zemeckis and Gale would be all-in on the project. Most would think that seeing Marty McFly, Doc Brown, andBack to the Future’s DeLoreanon the big screen again would entice Universal. Therefore, if the proposed movie can’t be made under the current circumstances, I don’t think there’s a chance that we will ever see aBack to the Futuremusical movie.
A Back To The Future Musical Would Probably Be Better Than A Sequel Or Direct Remake
A Back To The Future Musical Movie Would Stand Out From The Original Film
However, while Zemeckis and Gale have always been protective of theBack to the Futurefranchise, I thinkthere will come a time when movie studios desperately try to remake the original film. If this is ever the case, I will admit that I would prefer to see a musical version ofBack to the Futureonscreen, rather than a remake that will without a doubt not reach the quality of the original movie.
I Only Just Noticed This Genius Back To The Future Detail Now, Almost 40 Years Later
This hidden detail in Back to the Future is so subtle and easy to miss, but it’s also super smart and highlights the cleverness of the filmmaking.
If aBack to the Futureremake was ever made and was not instantly well-received, it would tarnish the legacy of the franchise, which currently has a very good reputation. However, sinceaBack to the Futuremusical movie would clearly have a different tone and feel more separate from the original movie, there wouldn’t be as much pressure on the franchise. Therefore, if there ever comes a day when studios are itching to make a newBack to the Futuremovie, I would rather have it be a musical. Although, if it happens, I’m not sure I would be singing along.
