Warning: Spoilers ahead forFuturamaseason 12, episode 5, “One is Silicon and the Other Gold.“Futuramaseason 12, episode 5, “One is Silicon and the Other Gold,” places one of my favorite characters a little more in the limelight than usual, and I’m so happy to see more of him beyond the occasional one-liner. The figure in question is, in my opinion, one of thebest supporting characters inFuturama. He’s long been a part of the show, and his role has largely been the same throughout. Finally, he becomes a slightly more prominent part of theFuturamacast, and it makes me want the writers to use him even more in the future.
Now,Futurama’s universe is very densely populated. So, I understand that very few characters are guaranteed an appearance in each episode. Sometimes, even the core members of the Planet Express crew can take a back seat. That being said, I feel like the show favors some minor characters more than others. In “One is Silicon and the Other Gold,” theFuturamawriters make a strong case for rotating its characters more heavily - and one in particular.

Futurama Season 12, Episode 5 Gives Hedonismbot Chance To Shine
Hedonismbot gets his biggest Futurama role yet
Given the fact that Hedonismbot is always shown decadently feeding himself grapes, it comes as no surprise to me that he owns a winery. The reveal inFuturamaseason 12 brings Maurice LaMarche’s character into the story for a joke-filled 90 seconds that had me laughing throughout.Hedonismbot’s quippy innuendos rarely come more than one at a time, and I loved hearing so many in such quick succession.
Hedonismbot’s first appearance on the show comes inFuturamaseason 5, episode 1, “Crimes of the Hot.”
90 seconds may sound like an unsatisfying length of time, but when the character is often only onscreen for a fraction of that, it feels like an eternity in this episode. While I thought his string of lazy sex puns were hilarious in their own right,I laughed even harder at LaBarbara Conrad clearly being donewith Hedonismbot’s schtick. It’s almost as if she’s softly acting as the voice of the audience, but I disagree with her and more from the robotic glutton.
Futurama Has Always Underused Hedonismbot
Hedonismbot can appear more frequently without getting boring
Hedonismbot is one ofFuturama’s hidden gems, and I often forget about him until he shows up. However, when he resurfaces, he always makes me laugh. I don’t think there are anynon-humanFuturamacharacters(minor or otherwise) as consistently funny as Hedonismbot, and he’s used far too infrequently. Of course, his whole thing could get old pretty quickly if used too much, and I understand that. On the other hand, I thinkFuturamashould strike a balance between how he’s been used in the past and his larger role in “One is Silicon and the Other Gold.”
