While I originally sawLuke Skywalker’ssacred Jedi texts as insignificant, I’m now thinking they could become a key part of a major new era ofStar Warsstorytelling. InThe Last Jedi, the sacred Jedi texts were in Luke’s possession and served as symbol for his flawed perspective on the Jedi and the Jedi Order he’d tried to build. However, they now serve an even greater purpose earlier in theStar Warstimeline.

Marvel Comics has recently concluded its major ongoingStar WarsandDarth Vaderseries, both of them telling canonical storiesset between the events ofThe Empire Strikes BackandReturn of the Jedi. Now, Marvel is planning to kick off a new era of storytelling set after the Battle of Endor. To that end,I feel confident Luke Skywalker’s Jedi texts will play a large role going forward, seeing as how he obtained the books before the events of Episode VI.

I Didn’t Think Much About The Jedi Texts Are First

“Page-Turners, They Were Not”

Keeping the collection of sacred Jedi texts in a tree, Luke Skywalker chose to keep the tomes during his exile on the remote island world of Ahch-To, despite hisJedi academy on Ossusfalling to ruin thanks to the corruption of his nephew, Ben Solo. As seen inThe Last Jedi, Luke shows Rey how his efforts and perspectives on the Jedi who came before him were flawed, having deified them while ignoring their failings and hubris. That said, he still has the Jedi texts.

At the end ofThe Last Jediafter Rey leaves to help the Resistance,Yoda’s Force ghost appears before Lukeand seemingly burns the Jedi texts in the tree before Luke’s eyes. As such, the texts come to represent Luke’s misplaced reverence, as Yoda tells him that their students are what teachers grow beyond. As such, the Jedi texts themselves weren’t all that important in favor of what they instead symbolized for Luke inThe Last Jedi.

I’m Now Realizing The Sacred Jedi Texts Could Be Crucial For Luke’s New Star Wars Era

Star Wars Is Preparing To Release Post-ROTJ Comics

Despite Luke’s future failings with the Jedi texts, the books still proved themselves invaluable earlier in theStar Warstimeline when he first acquired them from theForce vergence known as the Living Sea of Gazian. As seen in Charles Soule’s recently concludedStar Warsseries set afterEmpire Strike Back, the Jedi texts helped Luke continue his Jedi training in the interim after he left Yoda on Dagobah. The texts explain why he’s more powerful inReturn of the Jedias a Jedi Knight with a new lightsaber, having learned new techniques and how to wield the Force to a higher degree.

Star Wars Officially Bridges the Original & Sequel Trilogies with New BATTLE OF JAKKU

Star Wars plans to bridge trilogies with three brand-new series, fully revealing the Battle of Jakku as the final conflict of the Galactic Civil War.

The Jedi texts could become crucial as Marvel Comics heads into its next era ofStar Warsstorytelling. Beginning with a trilogy covering theBattle of Jakku, new adventures for Luke and his fellow Rebels will continue to be told as they work to build the New Republic (and eventually Luke’s Jedi academy). While the endpoint of Luke’s efforts is inevitable, I’m still excited to see the journey and how Luke grows into a Jedi Master, one who tries his best to rebuild the Jedi Order of the past exactly as it was (even if he should have also grown beyond its failures).

The Sacred Texts Can Also Help Rey Skywalker’s Movie

Building A New Jedi Order That Lasts

It’s also important to note thatYoda didn’t actually burn the Jedi texts during his screen with Luke inThe Last Jedi. Instead, Rey had already taken them with her before she left Ahch-To, and would continue using them to learn more about the Force and continue her Jedi training as seen inThe Rise of Skywalker. To that end, the sacred Jedi texts could prove to be just as key forRey’s upcoming New Jedi Order movieas they could very well be for Luke in upcomingStar Warscomics.

Rey Skywalker will more than likely work to build a New Jedi Order that has grown beyond those that came before, rather than relying on the books alone.

Keeping that in mind, it’s probably safe to assume that Rey has learned from Luke’s mistakes. The sacred Jedi texts are a strong foundation. However, Rey Skywalker will more than likely work to build a New Jedi Order that has grown beyond those that came before, rather than relying on the books alone.

Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker In Star Wars Return of the Jedi

Luke Skywalker

The son of Anakin Skywalker and Padmé Amidala, Luke was brought up on the desert planet Tatooine. Initially mentored by Obi-Wan Kenobi, Luke fired the fateful shot that destroyed the Death Star, and he became a rebel hero. Despite the fears of Obi-Wan and Yoda, Luke’s faith in his father was proved well-founded when Vader returned to the light. With the Emperor defeated, Luke dedicated himself to bringing back the Jedi; his first attempt ended in tragedy due to Palpatine’s manipulations, but Luke’s legacy lives on in Rey.
