Path of Exile 2has launched into early access, and with it comes a revamped skill system.PoE 2will stay in this early access state for about six months, but that doesn’t mean it will lack content. The early access has three full acts to enjoy, with plenty of new content coming until the official launch. Perhaps the biggest downside is that only six of the 12 classes are currently playable, many of which are thebest classes fromPath of Exile. However, these new classes will also trickle in over the six months.
The originalPoEskill system was simple but could feel constricting. Skills and Support Gems were slotted into gear, but this limited it to what gear a player had and the polarity of the slots. Slots could be changed with in-game resources, but it was another tedious step to using the desired skills. Luckily, one ofPoE 2’s biggest differenceshas simplified that and reduced the limitations.

A Simplier Path To Power
InPoE 2,Skill Gems have been simplified to a separate tab where you can equip up to nine different skills. From here, these Gems can be modified and slotted into the Hotbar. Skills can also be inspected by holding ALT, which will allow you to read every effect. This is also where some passive Skill Gems can go, which do not need to be slotted into the Hotbar.
This page will also feature your weapon skills, assome skills are limited to certain types of weapons. For example, wands will have a set base of skills that can only be found on them, and equipping the wand will give you access to those skill. This can make it tricky to level up a spell, but also rewards you if you’re able to find a powerful weapon.

There’s one announced feature in PoE 2 that might put the final nail in the coffin for the biggest ARPG franchise ever, and people should take notice.
Skill Gems – whether uncut, cut, or support – can befound by killing bosses, looting chests, and completing quests. Once acquired, they can be used to pick a skill or level up a skill to the level of the gem. The caveat to this is a Skill Gem can only pick a skill of the level it is or lower, so a level-one Skill Gem cannot pick a high-level spell, even if your level allows it.

Craft The Ultimate Skill
Skills inPoE 2are upgraded with Support Gems.Every skill has two support sockets for these gems, but that can eventually be increased to fivewith the use of Jeweller’s Orbs. These slots do not have any polarity, but the Support Gems do. The amount of each type (Strength, Dexterity, and Intelligence) that can be used depends on your character’s stats. Every five points in each stat grants another Support Gem slot.
The same Support Gem cannot be used on the same skill twice.
Each Support Gem will grant a different effect on the set skill.These come with various effects, like damage increases, cooldown reduction, or an added debuff. However, depending on the effect, some Support Gems may have drawbacks like an added cooldown or increased cost.
Path Of Exile 2 Has Perfectly Handled Skills
Simple And Plentiful
Compared to its competitors in the genre,PoE 2’s skill system feels so refreshing.It offers players a plethora of choices and, unlike most games, lets them use eight at once. Even when compared to its predecessor, equipping skills feels like a breeze without having to worry about trying to manage armor slots. There may still be some kinks to work out, but even in this early access state, it is a huge upgrade.
If there is one downside to this system, it would be that Support Gems are not as evolved as they could have been. They still function well, and the right setup can make a huge difference. However, when compared to how a game likeLast Epochhandles upgrading skills, with each skill having its own skill tree,it feels slightly underwhelming. This is a minor nitpick if anything, and doesn’t take away fromPoE 2in any large degree.

Diablo 4 confirms that players who purchase the Vessel of Hatred expansion will gain access to exclusive content in future updates and seasons.
Overall, this new system is one of the many changes this series has made for the better. It is also coupled with the fact that any class can use any skill, assuming the correct weapon is equipped, to allow a near-endless variety of builds. EvenPoE 2’s early access stateshows the potential of these changes, and this will only be expanded upon as more content is added, making for a much improved skill system inPath of Exile 2.
