Summary
Giancarlo Espositohas brought the biggest villain ofThe Mandalorianto life withMoff Gideon, and his iconicBreaking Badcharacter, Gus Fring, is to thank for that. Esposito debuted as Moff Gideon inThe Mandalorianseason 1, making his first appearance in theStar WarsTV show’s first trailer despite not appearing until season 1, episode 7. Gideon has since proven himself to be a formidable foe to the titular character,Din Djarin, and the Mandalorians as a whole, as he was the one responsible for theGreat Purgethat nearly wiped out the Mandalorian kind.
Esposito, of course, has had a massive hand in making Gideon as wonderfully menacing as he is, something that many of his past roles have helped with - particularly his most iconic villain role to date.Breaking Bad’s Gus Fring, also known as the Chicken Man, certainly helped to cement Esposito as a true mastermind of the antagonist archetype. The way he prepared for his role as Gus has, perhaps inadvertently, had a massive impact on his portrayal of Moff Gideon, meaning that Gus Fring paved the way for Moff Gideon to becomeThe Mandalorian’s biggest villain.

Giancarlo Esposito’s Gus Fring Approach Works Perfectly For Moff Gideon
The Calm, Quiet Listener Applies to Both Gus & Gideon
Esposito’s main approach with Gus Fring inBreaking Badwas to create a character whoconstantlymaintained a calm, professional demeanor while also appearing as if he was constantly holding on to a precious secret. Perhaps one of the best and most iconic examples of this is Gus adjusting his tie just before he dies, refusing to lose his cool even when he knew his fate was upon him. This is the kind of demeanor Moff Gideon also has inThe Mandalorian, and there’s no doubt the preparedness Esposito brought to Gus is to thank for that.
One of the things Esposito did to prepare for his role of Gus was yoga techniques, which helped him to achieve the extreme calmness that accompanied Gus' character. Clearly, he applied the same - if not a very similar - approach to Moff Gideon, whose terrifying sense of calm is one of his most defining attributes. This is something that certainly sets him apart from otherStar Warsvillains, who are often quite volatile or reactionary.

Moff Gideon Is A Better Villain Because Of Gus Fring
What Esposito Brings to These Roles is Fresh in Star Wars
Because Gus Fring happened to Esposito first, Moff Gideon was able to become a better villain for it. Audiences were struck by Gideon inThe Mandalorianseason 1 because of the stunning kind of calmness and stoicism that surrounded him.He was mysterious, and that made him dangerous, because he knew exactly what kinds of secrets he was holding on to. In season 2, he reinforced this idea by telling Din Djarin, “A friendly piece of advice, assume that I know everything.” This stoicism and calm, menacing demeanor Esposito adopted from Gus only faded from Gideon on occasion.
Fight scenes were the only times when Gideon was seen losing control, in bothThe Mandalorianseason 2 and 3 finales, respectively. Even then, those were situations where Gideon was quick to take action so that he could control the output of the scenario as best as he could - such as reaching for a blaster to take his own life rather than facing imprisonment. It’s clear to see how Esposito’s preparation for Gus Fring bled its way into Moff Gideon inThe Mandalorian, which means that a piece of Gus truly does live within theStar Warsuniverse.
