Warning: SPOILERS ahead for Ghosts season 4, episode 3!Ghostsexecutive producers Joe Port and Joe Wiseman have explained how Patience’s (Mary Holland) big decision in season 4, episode 3 could lead to more ghosts showing up in the series. DuringGhostsseason 4, episode 3, Patience put Sam (Rose McIver) on trial for witchcraft, taking it seriously following her raising the dead during a previous Halloween night. When the episode closes out, however, she suddenly decides the house holds too many temptations and will be going back into the ground. She says she is rejoining “the others,” indicating more unseen ghosts live beneath the Bed & Breakfast.
Speaking withTVLine, Port and Wiseman explained howPatience wasn’t making up the presence of other spirits inGhostsseason 4, episode 3, indicating more new faces could appear in the show soon. The showrunners explain how the idea of the underground ghosts opens the door for plenty of new faces as the series progresses. This is especially the case for season 4, with its 22-episode run offering plenty of space for those the Puritan spirit mentioned. Check out what Port and Wiseman had to say below:

Joe Port:I would say this is probably not the last that we’ve seen of Patience is my bet.
Joe Wiseman:I think it would be a strange thing for her to make up [ghosts in the dirt].

Joe Port:[Ghosts inside the B&B] haven’t necessarily been there as long as [Patience] has. She definitely spent a long time alone, we think. She was a little off to begin with, as you said, and then her time away was definitely not helpful on that front.
Joe Wiseman:We don’t have, like, a hard-and-fast rule [about new ghosts]. It’s just sort of like a felt thing. But itisa big property, and it is fun to meet new ghosts. Part of the challenge in the [writers’] room that we face is what ghosts can be on the property that we don’t know about yet and/or how do we bring ghosts from the outside? We’ve had poltergeists, who are attached to a person, we’ve had car ghosts. We have a few other ideas that we’re sort of bouncing around that could be fun. But you don’t want to do it too often because it starts to strain credulity a little bit. But at the same, that’s part of the nice thing about being able to do 22 [episodes] like we are this season. It gives you a little bit more breathing room. If we did want to do some of that other stuff, it’s not going to be on top of each other.

What Port & Wiseman’s Statement Means For New Souls In Ghosts Season 4
Patience Is Probably Going To Return - With New Faces
There are numerouscharacters inGhostsalready, withplenty of souls from across hundreds of years of history inhabiting the Woodstone B&B. However, the underground spirits are likely older than characters like Sass (Román Zaragoza) or Isaac (Brandon Scott Jones), potentially even being around as old as Thor (Devan Chandler Long), who was alive 1,000 years ago. This could offer new dynamics to the house, much like Patience’s presence did, providing a new and wild storyline depending on why those in the ground decide to come out.
Ghosts Season 4 Adds Another Spirit Inspired By A UK Character (But Flips Her Personality)
CBS Ghosts season 4 copied its new undead character at Woodstone B&B from the British series but changed her personality beyond recognition.
Port and Wiseman’s statement all but confirms they have plans for the spirits Patience was talking about, meaning new characters are bound to show up as season 4 progresses. Having pointed out the large number of episodes this time around, it seems the duo might have plans for a strong number of new faces, potentially with their own interesting ghost powers. Not only could this indicate some interesting standalone episodes, but possibly an overarching story having to do with underground spirits trying to find room to live at the B&B, possibly setting upGhostsseason 5conflicts too.
Our Take On Patience’s Decision & More Ghosts In Ghosts Season 4
It’s The Perfect Way To Continue Evolving The Show
Patience doesn’t seem like she’ll be gone forever, given just how important she’s been teased to be ever since the season 3 finale. Instead, her return to the dirt could result in a much broader story taking place, withGhostspresenting a new conflict as a larger number of spirits start to come to the B&B. Given how much potential there is for new characters, the comedy will likely follow through on this level of potential for even more unique tales this season.
New episodes ofGhostsseason 4 air Thursdays at 8:30 p.m. ET on CBS.
