I’m excited by the news of aGame of Thronesmovie, butI’m worried that they might be circling back to the original plan for season 8. A recent report announced that Warner Bros. is developing afilm set in theGame of Thronesuniverse, though there weren’t any details to suggest what the plot might be. Importantly, it’s so early in development that there isn’t a director or writer attached, so it’s to be seen how much progress the project undergoes, given how manyGame of Thronesspinoff planshave been scrapped already.

One thing I’ve been worried about withGame of Thrones, especially afterHouse of the Dragonseason 2, is Warner Bros.’s plans to develop a cinematic universe-type story with George R.R. Martin’s fantasy world. TheGame of Thronesendingwas massively divisive, but the prequel show has continuously connected to it with the Aegon’s Dream prophecy idea. With that in mind and the canceled Jon Snow spinoff idea,I’m curious if the planned movie is another attempt to rectify the original show’s ending.

The Game Of Thrones Movie Could Bring The Creators' Original Season 8 Plan Full Circle

D&D Originally Wanted To End Game Of Thrones With A Film Trilogy

BeforeGame of Thronesseason 8 was released with six highly cinematic episodes that capped off the iconic series, showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss had an original plan to conclude the saga with three feature films. While it’s not uncommon for TV shows to have subsequent movies, HBO denied this request, and the narrative concluded on television. Now that there’s aGame of Thronesmovie in development, I’m wondering if this ties back to the creators' original plans and if they’re hoping to bring the Jon Snow sequel idea to life on the big screen instead.

8 Game Of Thrones Stories That Would Be Perfect For Its Upcoming Movie

With a Game of Thrones movie in development, here are some stories from George R.R. Martin’s world that would perfectly fit the big screen.

It’s pure speculation for now, but with Warner Bros.’s desires to franchise the title, it would make sense that they’d want something set afterGame of Thronesseason 8, essentially as a cushion. It’s impossible to fix season 8, but adding something valuable to the story’s ending might make future prequel shows feel more worthwhile. I can’t imagine what exactly this would look like, and I don’t want to see some form of “Somehow, the Night King returned,” butit’s clear that they’ve been circling ideas for a sequel, even if nothing concrete has formed.

Making The Movie A Sequel Would Set It Apart From Game Of Thrones' TV Spinoffs

The TV Spinoffs Are All Planned Prequels Set At Different Points In Time

Continuously expanding on theGame of Thronesuniverse is going to be an inherently complicated task to keep viewers interested in, as they’re going to be constantly jumping around on the timeline to different eras. For example, thenext show,A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, is going to be a sequel toHouse of the Dragonbut a prequel toGame of Thrones. After that,Aegon’s Conquestis going to be a prequel to all three. Telling a sequel story in a cinematic format could be an interesting way to distinguish it.

Seeing something like “The Battle of the Bastards” on the big screen would be outstanding, but I’d rather it be a different story from Martin’s world

In a sense, the idea of having aGame of Thronesmovie is appealing to me, asa film adaptation could bring back that “event” feeling of the original show. Seeing something on a similar scale to “The Battle of the Bastards” on the big screen would be outstanding, but I’d rather it be a different story from Martin’s world, like the Blackfyre Rebellions or the original Long Night.

I’m Afraid A Game Of Thrones Sequel Movie Would Just Be Season 9

It’s Too Late To Fix Game Of Thrones' Ending

Like I said, I really don’t want to seeGame of Thronestry to bring back the Night King and fulfill audiences' original desires for The Long Night storyline. That ship has sailed for the HBO adaptation universe and can only be resolved by Martin releasingThe Winds of Winter. Warner Bros. can try to tell a compelling story about Jon Snow or the world of Westeros after the events of the original series, butthey can’t try to retroactively fix season 8’s problems by bringing everyone back for more. It just won’t work.

House Of The Dragon Is Trying To Fix One Of Game Of Thrones' Biggest Mistakes, But It Totally Misunderstands GRRM’s Books

House of the Dragon is making up for something that Game of Thrones lacked, but it’s missing the point of why it’s in GRRM’s books in the first place.

Even though it’s speculation, I’m skeptical of Warner Bros.’s broader franchise-related decisions in recent years.House of the Dragonalready had issues with its budget being reduced and the company telling them they only had eight episodes for season 2, causing several of the narrative complaints. HBO had the right ingredients early on withGame of Thrones, and I don’t want to see them try to transform the franchise into something that it isn’t in hopes of using the title for box office appeal.

Game Of Thrones

Based on George R. R. Martin’s ongoing A Song of Ice and Fire novel series, Game of Thrones is a fantasy drama set in the fictional continents of Westeros and Essos. It follows noble families like the Starks, Lannisters, and Targaryen vying for control of the Iron Throne while a rising threat from the undead looms in the North. The series received significant critical success and amassed a loyal fan base due to its high production values, sprawling sets, iconic characters, and shocking twists.
