The Smile Curse is the powerful force that causes many characters to die by suicide throughoutSmileandSmile 2, and here is every confirmed victim from the franchise and how they died.The Smile Curse is the main source of conflictthroughout theSmilefranchise, with it leading to the deaths of almost everyone that becomes posessed by it. BothSmileprotagonists, Rose Cotter and Skye Riley, have fallen victim to the smile curse, as well as a variety of other characters. So, here is a full breakdown of every character that has died as ofSmile 2.
The Smile Entity, sometimes also referred to as The Monstrosity, is the supernatural force that is behind the Smile Curse. According to the rules ofSmile, the Entity possesses a victim, slowly driving its human host mad until the host ends its own life after four days. Then,another living host who witnessed the previous host’s death is possessed by the Smile Entity, continuing the chain of death. The Smile Entity can create illusions that mainly come in the form of smiling humans, althoughSmile 2reveals a variety of other powersthat come with the Smile Curse.
10Robert Talley
Killed Someone Else
Robert Talley is an interesting character in theSmileuniverse, as he is the only known character that has gotten the Smile Curse and lived to tell the tale. Every other victim of the Smile Entity got possessed, became a victim for a few days, and then ended their own life, passing it along to the next victim. When investigating the Smile Entity in the original film, however,Rose Cotter seeks out Robert Talley, with him explaining how he managed to live through his encounter with the demonic force.
Why Skye Drinks So Many Voss Water Bottles In Smile 2
Smile 2 gives a lot of detail about Skye Riley’s backstory, with this one strange detail leaving many viewers scratching their heads at the beginning.
When Rose meets Robert Talley, he is in jail for murder. Talley tells her that, instead of ending his own life, he killed somebody else.This caused the Smile Entity to get transferredto the key witness to the murder, meaning that Robert himself didn’t have to die. While this method of exorcising the Smile Entity isn’t seen anywhere else in theSmilefranchise, Robert suggests that Rose tries it out, meaning that it seems to be an effective way to pass on the Smile Curse to someone else.
9Morris’ Brother
Ripped His Jaw Off With A Crowbar
InSmile 2, protagonist Skye Riley gets tracked down by a mysterious stalker named Morris.Morris has been tracking the Smile Entityfor its past eight hosts, with him trying to reach its host before they die. Morris isn’t able to reach Lewis before his death, but after doing some investigating, Morris discovers that Skye Riley is the last person that Lewis texted. This allows Morris to correctly deduce that the Smile Curse was passed on to her, with the duo meeting at a bar.
At the bar, Morris explains that his brother was actually the victim of the Smile Curse, although nobody believed him when he tried explaining the curse.Morris' brother then tore off his own jaw with a crowbar, passing the curse along to someone at a gas station. Although this isn’t confirmed, it would make sense for Morris' Brother to have been the key witness in the murder that Robert Talley committed, although it is possible that ther could have been more victims between the two.

Method Of Death Unknown
Very little is known about the victim that came after Morris' brother, with Morris only briefly mentioning him. This victim is the one who witnessed Morris' brother rip off his own jaw with a crowbar. Whilethe gas station man’s method of death isn’t explained, he is key to linking the events that are described inSmile 2to the events ofLaura Hasn’t Slept, setting up the domino effect that continues intoSmileandthe ending ofSmile 2.

Gouged Her Own Eyes Out
Although it isn’t known how the man who witnessed the death of Morris' brother died, it is known who was around to see it. In the originalSmile, a picture of a character named Angela Powell is shown, with her story being pieced together from the events described inSmileandSmile 2. Before the events ofLaura Hasn’t Slept, Angela was infected with the Smile Curse, with her ending her own life while on an elevator.

According to the originalSmile,Angela ended her own life by gouging her eyes out. The only person who witnessed this gruesome death is the next victim in the Smile Entity’s wicked chain, Gabriel Muñoz.

Beat Himself With A Hammer
Much of the story of Gabriel Muñoz’s time being possessed by the Smile Entity comes from the 2020 short filmLaura Hasn’t Sleptas well as the beginning of the original smile. As Laura Weaver explains, Gabriel Muñoz was her art history professor, with him having seen Angela Powell gouge her eyes out while on the elevator.
This led to Gabriel Muñoz becoming possessed by the Smile Entity, with him dealing with the Smile Curse for the next few days. Muñoz then ended his own life bybreaking his jaw and repeatedly hitting himself with a hammer, with Laura Weaver being the witness to this death.
5Laura Weaver
Cuts Herself With A Broken Pot Shard
All of the aforementioned deaths occurred before the events of theSmilefranchise, withLaura Hasn’t Sleptkicking off the franchise with the story of Laura Weaver. In the short film,Laura is a grad student who witnessed her art history professor Gabriel Muñoz bludgeon himself to death with a hammer. This led to Laura becoming infected with the Smile Curse, although her various psychiatrists believed that her condition was caused by a psychotic break that was the result of witnessing her teacher’s suicide.
Laura Weaver returns in the firstSmile, with Rose Cotter being her doctor. During one of their sessions, the Smile Entity kills Laura, with her using a shard from a broken pot to cut her throat open. Rose has to witness Laura’s death, with this being theSmilefranchise’s first on-screen death and kicking off the events of the movies.

Sets Herself On Fire
Rose Cotter is the protagonist of the firstSmilemovie, with her inheriting the Smile Curse after witnessing Laura Weaver’s death. During the early stages of the curse,Rose tracks down Robert Talley, the only known living victim of the Smile Curse. Robert tells her to try and kill someone else, a method that worked for him. The Smile Curse eventually causes Rose to kill her cat, although the Smile Entity still has hold of her after this killing.
What Happened To The Cat In Smile?!
Smile featured the traumatizing death of Rose’s cat. The movie never reveals how the pet died, but there may be an answer for what happened to it.
Despite spending the entirety ofSmileattempting to find a cure,Rose Cotter eventually dies due to the Smile Curse. At the very end of the film, the Smile Entity takes control of Rose, causing her to douse herself in gasoline and burn herself alive. Joel is there to witness this death, with the chain of Smile Curse deaths not being continued until Joel returns at the beginning ofSmile 2.

Gets Hit By A Car
Kyle Gallner’s Joel returns inSmile 2six daysafter becoming possessed by the Smile Entity at the end of the originalSmile, with him having lived for two days longer than the average victim of the Smile Curse. The movie opens with Joel showing up to the house of two drug dealers, with him killing one in the hopes of the witness becoming infected with the Smile Curse. However, he ends up killing both of them, with his plan failing.
During this debacle,several more characters show up, including Lewis. Joel tries to flee the scene, although he is hit and killed by a truck while running out of the house. Joel’s death was witnessed by Lewis, leading to him becoming possessed by the Smile Entity.

Bashes His Face In With A Weight
InSmile 2,Lewis Fregoli is a drug dealer who sells to Skye Riley, with him having witnessed Joel’s death while buying more supply from two other dealers. The Smile Curse slowly drives Lewis mad, leading to him having several psychotic breaks. One night, Skye asks Lewis if she can come over and buy more drugs, with him acting frantic as soon as she shows up.
While Skye is at his apartment, the Smile Entity takes control of Lewis. Lewis then picks up an iron weight plate and bashes his face in, ending his life. This leads to the Smile Entity taking control of Skye Riley, cursing the protagonist ofSmile 2.

Forces A Microphone Into Her Head
Skye Riley is the main protagonist ofSmile 2, with her becoming possessed by the Smile Curse after witnessing Lewis' suicide. The film chronicles her psychological downfall, with her having hallucinations of her friends, family, and more. The Smile Curse has a massive effect on her career and mental state, with her believing that she is working with Morris in order to rid herself of the curse beforeSmile 2’s big twist.
At the end ofSmile 2,Skye discovers that she is on stage at one of her concerts. While there, the Smile Entity takes control of her, with Skye forcing her microphone into her head. This obviously kills Skye, but it isn’t even the scariest part of the film’s ending. Skye’s death is witnessed by thousands of fans, meaning that the Smile Curse may have been passed on to each one of them at the end ofSmile 2.

Smile 2 is the sequel to the 2022 psychological horror film by director Parker Finn that centers on a therapist who witnesses a patient’s suicide, leading to a series of terrifying supernatural events. The sequel will see the return of Finn as director, with Paramount continuing distribution.
