During an interview withTV Insider,Dan Erickson weighed in on whether Gemma knows that is innie Mark running away from her during theSeveranceseason 2 finale. The show’s creator says “it’s a little bit unclear” if Gemma “understands the notion of the severance procedure.” However, since “she’s been going through a version of it herself on the testing floor and she’s a smart character,” Gemma can likely figure out that it was innie Mark who made that decision, but that doesn’t make it any less heartbreaking for her. Mark and Mark and Helly in Severance season 2

I think it’s a moment of devastation and confusion, and it’s a little bit unclear from what is onscreen to exactly what degree she understands the notion of the severance procedure. Of course, she’s been going through a version of it herself on the testing floor and she’s a smart character. So you think that one assumes that at a certain point, she’ll sort of put two and two together and understand what’s happened, and that was not necessarily the version of her husband that she knows that was coming up the elevator with her. At the same time, at the moment, all she sees is her husband who she’s been missing for literally years making a choice and running off with somebody else, and there’s no explanation for that. That doesn’t take the heartbreak out of it.

What Dan Erickson’s Comments Mean For Severance Season 2’s Ending

Gemma Is Most Certainly Aware

Severancecreator Dan Erickson acknowledges that, while it’s unclear from what is onscreen how much Gemma actually understands the severance procedure, she has been experiencing her own version of it on the testing floor for years. She’s also a smart character, having been a professor of Russian literature at Ganz College. In turn, Gemma can likely piece together what happened, realizing that it was innie Mark who made that decision.

10 Biggest Questions Severance Season 3 Must Answer

Following the explosive finale of Severance season 2, there are several burning questions that the Apple TV+ series must answer in season 3.

However, this doesn’t make the decision any less heartbreaking for Gemma. Erickson emphasizes that, in the moment, Gemma is simply witnessing her long-lost husband run away with another woman without explanation. Regardless of her ability to figure out the truth later on, the immediate impact remains heartbreaking. After being separated for years, she finally reunites with him, only to see him make a choice that feels like abandonment. This emotional gut punch makes the season 2 finale especially tragic from Gemma’s perspective.

The season 2 finale leaves Gemma heartbroken and alone, but she is technically free from Lumon. However, she must still navigate her way out of the building and likely seek refuge with Mark’s sister, Devon, though Lumon will likely come after her again. Gemma also knows little about innie Mark, and if she had encountered Helena during her time at Lumon, she might recognize the woman he chose over her. Devon, and possibly Cobel, could play a crucial role in helping her make sense of innie Mark’s apparent betrayal during theSeveranceseason 2 finale.
