This article contains spoilers for The Night Agent season 2.

The Night Agentcreator Shawn Ryan addresses the return of Hong Chau as the villainous Diane Farr. The series is based on the novel by Matthew Quirk of the same name and follows FBI mole Peter Sutherland (Gabriel Basso). By theend ofThe Night Agentseason 1, it’s revealed that White House Chief of Staff Diane Farr is involved in some nefarious and deadly dealings, feigning innocence to earn Peter’s trust. It’s a betrayal that still haunts Peter in the show’s recently debuted second installment.

In an interview withTVLine, Ryan touches on a cameo from NBC News anchor Savannah Guthrie that features a brief mention of what happens to Farr. He explains that this ismeant to indicate that Farr received justice for her duplicitous dealings:

Diane sits in the White House in The Night Agent season 1.

We were very lucky to get Savannah Guthrie to do a little cameo for us, where Monroe is watching TV and she’s interviewing one of the presidential candidates and he references “the party of Vice President Redfield and Diane Farr.” So, I think we can assume that justice has found Diane Farr in season 2.

In terms of whether viewers should expect to see Farr again, Ryan teases thatPeter may well end up having to reach out to Farrin the future and compares her to Hannibal Lecter in that regard:

Diane Farr and Peter Sutherland

Listen, people went to go see Hannibal Lecter in prison for information. Who knows? Who knows when Peter might have to go visit her behind bars to find out something.

What Diane Farr Still Means To The Night Agent

Her Actions Have Changed Peter

The Night Agentseason 2begins with Peter having to watch his partner Alice (Brittany Snow) get killed when an operation goes bad in Bangkok. Because of Farr’s betrayal, and her failed plan to use Peter as a fall guy, he has a difficult time trusting his new handler Catherine Weaver (Amanda Warren) in the early season 2 episodes. Rose Larkin (Luciane Buchanan) evenhas to remind him that not everyone is like Diane. He still struggles with trust, though he eventually comes around to working with Weaver for the benefit of Rose.

Why Diane Farr Really Hired Peter In The Night Agent

Of the many twists and turns that comprised Netflix’s The Night Agent was Diane Farr’s true intentions in hiring Peter Sutherland.

The crucial character may not be amongThe Night Agent’s season 2 cast, perhaps owing to Chau’s higher profile after becoming an Oscar-nominated actor for her supporting performance inThe Whale. But that is exactly why it would be interesting to see Farr again, making use of one of the show’s most talented performers and allowing her to chew some scenery as a remorseful antagonist who is presumably stuck behind bars.

Our Take On Hong Chau Returning As Diane Farr

It’d Be A Great Pay-Off

Even though she’s not likely to be back in a series regular capacity, it would be a treat for audiences to see Chau pop up for a few scenes in the already-confirmedThe Night Agentseason 3. The actor is too good, and Diane’s significance to the story is too important, to sidestep her altogether. It’d all solidify the connections between seasons, making for a more rewarding experience for viewers who have been watching since the start.
