Dexter: Original Sin Timeline Explained: When The Prequel Is Set Before The Original Show
Dexter: Original Sin will take place in 1991 Miami, fifteen years before the start of the original series and roughly 30 years before New Blood.
On one of Laura’s last visits with Santos Jimenez at the shipping yard where she would eventually be killed, she watched a drug dealer be beaten and have his finger removed, which was likely followed by his death. That man’s fate was sealed after the cartel discovered he was stealing from them, soLaura feared what would happen to her if they found out that she was double-crossing them and feeding information to the police. When Laura returns and sees Harry, she asks him if she can stop, as she worries that she’s going to end up dead.
Tragically, that’s exactly what happens. When Dexter found out that Harry had sent Laura into the shipping yard on the day that she was murdered, he wondered whether Harry had only adopted him out of feeling guilty and responsible for his mother’s death. In the original show, it was implied that Deb was born a few years afterHarry and Doris adopted Dexter, butthe prequel now reveals that she arrived perhaps just a few days before the Morgans took in Dexter.
All at the same time, Harry is dealing with fixing his marriage, grieving Laura’s death, being a father to a newborn again, and adopting a young boy who will forever be scarred by his mother’s murder.
While it seemed as if part of the reason Harry chose to adopt Dexter was because he and Doris didn’t have any other children, Deb’s birth inDexter: Original Sinseason 1, episode 6’s flashback sequence confirms that’s not the case.
