Daredevil actor Charlie Cox discusses his experience playing Matt Murdock in theDaredevilshow and weighs in on the change between Netflix andMarvel Studios.Charlie Cox has played Daredevil for ten years— four appearances over three years in Netflix’s threeDaredevilseasons andThe Defenders, and three appearances in three years acrossSpider-Man: No Way Home,She-Hulk: Attorney At Law, andDaredevil: Born Again. While Cox’s Daredevil is now an official MCU hero, that possibility looked quite unlikely whenDaredevilseason 3’s endingseemed to be the definitive ending of the character’s journey back in 2018.
Speaking about his upcoming MCU series during theDaredevil: Born Againpanel atFAN EXPOSan Francisco 2024,Charlie Cox addressesDaredevil’s cancelation by Netflix in late 2018. Cox comparesDaredevil’s cancelation to a break-up, recalling a"breaking up period"when he processed the news that the show wasn’t going to continue. Charlie Cox’s comments below:

“What’s weird is that in 2018 when the show was canceled, I suddenly had like breaking up period, like a mourning period. I was like ‘oh wow’. ‘Cause we thought we were going to do a season 4, and then that didn’t happen, and kind of overnight we got a phone call and it was like, ‘we’re done, it’s finished’. It felt like a break-up, a little bit, in a kind of a weird way. And then like all break-ups, of course we got back together.”
Charlie Cox also admits that his time as Daredevil will inevitably come to an end sooner or later. Cox voices his appreciation for the role and states that he’s now more accepting of the scenario where he hands up the cowl. Cox says,

“But now I’m aware there will presumably come a time where it really does stop happening… and the longer it goes on the harder it will be to let go of… But when I was at Comic-Con I was chatting with a couple of theDaredevilwriters, comic team, and they’re getting ready to release aDaredevilcomic that takes place when Matt Murdock is in his 60s, so I was like ‘oh okay, great, so we’ve got some time’”.
What Charlie Cox’s Comments Mean For His Future As Daredevil
Marvel May Still Have Plenty Of Daredevil Stories In Store
While it left a few loose ends,Netflix’sDaredevilseason 3 could have easily been the end for Charlie Cox’s Matt Murdock. After all, Daredevil’s pact with the Kingpin spared both characters’ lives but simultaneously spelled defeat for Wilson Fisk. Thankfully, Marvel Studios is incorporating Netflix’s Marvel continuity into the MCU’s main timeline, allowing Cox’s Daredevil to interact with other Marvel characters. However, this also means that Daredevil’s enmity with Kingpin and Bullseye will continue to evolve, and Matt Murdock will probably have to face bigger challenges after he believed Kingpin’s humiliation to be enough.
I Know Just Who Would Be The Perfect Villain For Spider-Man 4 (Especially After Daredevil: Born Again)
Spider-Man 4 is one of the most anticipated projects expected in coming years within the MCU, but Daredevil could be introducing his next villain.
Just like their comic book counterparts, Daredevil and Kingpin seem to be building a lifelong feud with no end in sight. However, Charlie Cox and Vincent D’Onofrio will eventually depart their Marvel roles, as will all other MCU characters. In order to retire their portrayals, Marvel Studios will need to craft a story that does these characters justice. Until then, the MCU’s Daredevil will probably appear in multiple projects, from futureDaredevil: Born Againfollow-ups to team-ups with characters like Tom Holland’s Spider-Man.

Charlie Cox’s Daredevil Deserved A Role In The MCU Proper
Not only isDaredevilone of Marvel’s most famous heroes, butCharlie Cox’s portrayal also made his MCU arrival a huge opportunity for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Although Marvel Studios could have rebooted the street-level Defenders in order to help them stand apart from Netflix’s properties, the studio made the effort to integrate their already established lore into the franchise. As a result, the MCU gained a rich world filled with complex characters and actors who are passionate about their respective Marvel heroes and villains. This effort will continue to pay off inDaredevil: Born Again.
