As the final round of the tournament begins, Spider-Girl quickly pounces on her devilish opponent. Staring Daredevil in the face, Maka attempts to take Murdock’s incredible fighting abilities. However, as Spider-Girlstares into Daredevil’s eyes, her powers do nothing. Taken aback, Spider-Girl wonders why her mutant abilities failed, to which Daredevil cheekily responds, “maybe I’ve got my eyes closed.” Spider-Girl’s power doesn’t just require her to look her targets in the eye, but rather, her opponents must look her in the eye;against Matt Murdock, Maka’s power is rendered entirely useless.

However, like Spider-Girl’s power, the Penance Stare requires the target to look into the void of a Ghost Rider’s “eyes.” InDaredevil #295 (1991)and later inDaredevil #372 (1998),Daredevil and the Ghost Rider clash in brief moments of misunderstanding. Both times, Matt stood between the Ghost Rider and his thirst for vengeance. However,when faced with Penance, Matt sees nothing.
