Steve Rogers’Captain Americajust got a shining new costume courtesy of the Asgardian gods, showing what the Super Soldier would look like as a warrior deity. The move comes as Cap unites with the Asgardian god Volstagg to stop war engulfing the Nine Realms - a rare team-up that’s part of a new Marvel initiative to unite uncommon heroes who don’t usually work together.
In a preview ofCaptain America & Volstagg #1- by J. Michael Straczynski, Bernard Chang, Marcelo Maiolo and Joe Caramagna - Steve Rogers arrives in Asgard to be briefed on a new threat byWarriors Three member Volstagg. However, before Volstagg shares the nature of the threat, he asks Captain America to change into something more suitable for the setting.

Captain America’s godly costume maintains his red, white and blue coloring, but with plenty of gold. Armored vambraces and greaves protect the Super Soldier, while also showcasing his muscular arms and legs. The armor amplifies the wing motif that often appears on Cap’s helmet, adding golden wings to his shoulders and an eagle-themed helmetthat Steve seems reluctant to wear, at least so far. If there was an Asgardian God of Liberty in Marvel lore, Steve Rogers showcases exactly how he’d look.

Captain America & Volstagg #1is one of six one-shots from J. Michael Straczynski and a variety of artists, uniting unusual pairings like Ghost Rider and Galactus, Hulk and Doctor Strange, and Doctor Doom and Rocket Raccoon. The adventure comes on the heels of Thor, Captain America and Spider-Man uniting as a new ‘Warriors Three’ to combat a supernatural evil plaguing Thor’s former home of Broxton, Oklahoma. Now, Cap is uniting with a member of theoriginalAsgardian trio to fend off a war. The issue’s summary reads:
J. MICHAEL STRACZYNSKI’S TEAM-UP EVENT CONTINUES AS VOLSTAGG RECRUITS THE SENTINEL OF LIBERTY! When a war breaks out in the Nine Realms, Volstagg of the Warriors Three turns to the only man skilled enough to end it: Steve Rogers, Captain America! JMS teams with visionary artist Bernard Chang for the second in a series of one-shots bringing unlikely Marvel characters together for tales unlike any other!

So far, it’s not clear what threat Captain America and Volstagg will be facing, buta war engulfing the Nine Realms is a threat of the highest order, not seen since 2019’sWar of the Realms. While Volstagg may be the least serious of the original Warriors Three, he’s still an ages-old warrior who has killed and sacrificed for millennia, all while having a hidden core of steel when it comes to the safety of children and innocents. He’s also an effective fighter, especially inhis alternate guise as the War Thor.
WithCaptain America’s recent lore changeshaving established him asa champion of the godly manifestation of Life, aka Lyra, it makes sense that he’s now operating on the level of the Asgardian gods. Fans will soon see what threat has united Volstagg andCaptain America, but one thing’s for certain - Steve Rogers will meet the challenge head on in a new costume worthy of the gods.

Captain America & Volstagg #1is available February 26 from Marvel Comics.
