The production companyBlumhousehas continued a 2025 streak of negative reviews with its newest horror movie. After making a smash hit out of the 2009 found footage releaseParanormal Activity, which spawned a massive film franchise, Blumhouse became notable for crafting low-budget horror and thriller movies that usually had sizable returns on investment, includingthePurgefranchise, theInsidiousmovies,Sinister,Ouija,The Gallows, and more. They have also found critical success with movies like Jordan Peele’sGet Out, which has a Certified Fresh 98% Rotten Tomatoes score and won an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay.

However,Blumhouse moviesstruggled to connect with critics or audiences in 2024 after the company scored major box office hits withM3GAN,Five Nights at Freddy’s, andInsidious: The Red Doorin 2023. While their 2024 movies largely turned profits (with the notable exception ofAfrAId, which grossed $13 million against its $12 million budget), only one of their five 2024 releases,Speak No Evil(83%), earned a Fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes, whilethree earned especially dismal scores below 25%, namelyImaginary(24%),Night Swim(19%), andAfrAID(23%).
