The arrival of the spooky season makes October one of the best months to revisit yourAnimal Crossing: New Horizonsisland. New bugs, fish, and deep-sea creatures can be found and caught all over, with Southern Hemisphere players enjoying a surprising abundance of new wildlife. At the end of the month, players can also celebrate Halloween, one of the biggest events in the island calendar.
Much likeSeptember inAnimal Crossing: New Horizons, October is one of the best months for critter collectors. The bugs, fish, and deep-sea creatures that can be found are particularly lively with the change of seasons, making this one of the best times to catch and add to a Museum Collection. Unlike September, however, it’s also an excellent month for social animals, with a few events, both big and small.

Bug catchers in the Northern Hemisphere should also be aware that 10 different bug species will disappear at the end of October. This actually includes the Ladybug itself, which won’t return until March, as well as bugs that prefer the warmer weather such asAnimal Crossing’snotoriously aggressive Scorpions.

Chat with your villagers tocatch Fleas inAnimal Crossing: New Horizons. Some may mention they have a strange itch or want to scratch themselves. This indicates a Flea is on them: to catch it, hit the villager with a bug-catching net.Fleas may also appear as small black dots on villagers. Once caught, the villager will typically be grateful for your help in getting rid of their itching.
Critter collectors in the Southern Hemisphere should attempt to catch a Tarantula as they exit the monthly bug rotation at the end of October. Tarantulas are rare and sell for an impressive 8,000 Bells; however, they are also very aggressive and will chase players.

The Dab is actually more interesting than its initial appearance may suggest. Players cancook several recipes using Dabas an ingredient. Players in the Northern Hemisphere should also be aware that 10 different fish species will disappear at the end of October. This includes the Moray and Ribbon Eels, as well asvery rare fish such as the Giant Trevallyand the Mahi-mahi.
How to Find (& Catch) Mahi-Mahi in Animal Crossing
Despite being one of only four fish to be found off the Pier in Animal Crossing: New Horizons, the Mahi-Mahi is very rare and quite valuable.

The sea cucumber will exit the Southern Hemisphere rotation at the end of October. Players should also spend time trying to catch the spider crab and snow crab while diving. Like the Tuna and Marlin, these crab species are rare and sell for very high prices but are hard to catch.
The rarest deep-sea creatures tend to swim faster than the player. One of the best tips I use to catch fast-moving deep-sea creatures is to swim slowly towards bubbles by gently nudging the joystick before suddenly diving into the water when right on top of a creature. Alternatively, you may also swim towards them at an angle, pushing them towards the map edge (marked by a net) and forcing them to change direction.
October 2024 Events And Seasonal Items
Big Spooky Season Events And Small-Scale Tournaments
From October 1st to October 10th, players in the Southern Hemisphere will be able to enjoy Cherry Blossom Season.During this event, the hardwood trees on player islands will blossom with pink cherry blossom petals. Players can catch these petals with a net in order to craft special cherry blossom-themed DIY recipes.
Shoot down balloons using a slingshot during Cherry Blossom Season to obtain DIY recipes for cherry blossom-themed items.
October also marks the last Fishing Tourney of 2024 for players in both hemispheres. This always occurs on the second Saturday of the month, so aspiring anglers should mark October 12th, 2024, on their calendars.
During the Fishing Tourney, players can join C.J.’s special fishing tournament. Catching fish during the tournament rewards you with points, which can be exchanged for prizes. Players can join their first tournament for free, but subsequent entries cost 500 Bells each. As a bonus, C.J. will also buy fish from players.
Halloween also arrives on October 31st.Preparing for Halloween is highly recommended, as it’s one of the biggest events of the year. During October and before Halloween, players can buy Candy from Nook’s Cranny and give it to Jack, a pumpkin-headed visiting villager, in exchange for some spooky items. Body paints and eye colors can be exchanged for Nook Miles, and the Able Sisters shop will sell limited-edition costumes for anyone who wants to really get into the spirit of Halloween.
Players can also give Candy to villagers to obtain more items, DIY recipes, or Lollipops.Lollipops and Candy can be gifted to Jack to receive Jack’s Face and Jack’s Robe as items. It’s worth noting that if players don’t give Candy to a villager when asked, their skin and eye color may be rearranged as a prank.
As a fun little interaction, players can disguise themselves as Jack by wearing his face and robe. When spoken to, villagers will give the player Candy before realizing they’ve been tricked.
Curiously, there aren’t any Nook Shopping events exclusive to October.Players can buy the Moon Rug to celebrate Moon-viewing Day between September 7th and October 8th; however, other months have many more limited-time items for sale.
Regardless, October can be extraordinarily fun. With a good number of new critters to catch and one of the year’s biggest events, October is always guaranteed to be one of the most lively and entertaining months inAnimal Crossing: New Horizons.
