Summary
Star Wars Rebelsintroduced viewers to several new Force users, each one meeting a different fate by the end of the series. Because the story was set after the Jedi purge in theStar Warsprequel trilogy, there were far fewer Force users in this era. The team behindStar Wars Rebelssought to recapture the magic of theoriginalStar Warstrilogy, with the hero learning about the larger galaxy and how the Force works. In this way, having a handful of Force users helped the show’s premise by making it special when a new one was introduced.
Even so,Star Wars Rebelsstill featured many outstanding Force users created specifically for the series. Some even made appearances in the tie-in books and shorts before making their proper onscreen debut in the show.Star Wars Rebelsalso featured returning Force users from pastStar Warsmovies and TV showsto complement the new characters. 8The Grand Inquisitor
First Appearance:Star Wars Rebelsseason 1, episode 1"Spark of Rebellion"
Known simply as “the Inquisitor” in season 1, the Grand Inquisitor originally appeared at the end of theStar Wars Rebelspremiere, but later airings added a scene between him and Darth Vader at the beginning. As the leader of the other Inquisitors,the Grand Inquisitor was charged with hunting down Jedi survivorsand any Force-sensitive children who could grow up to oppose the Empire. When Agent Kallus discovered that theGhostcrew was led by a Jedi, he contacted the Grand Inquisitor, who made it his mission to hunt the rebels down.
The Grand Inquisitor was eventually defeated in a lightsaber duel with Kanan Jarrus, allowing himself to fall to his death rather than face Darth Vader’s wrath. InStar Wars Rebelsseason 2, Kanan learned in a vision thatthe Grand Inquisitor was once a Jedi Temple Guard, and Dave Filoni confirmed that he was one of the Guards who arrested Barriss Offee inStar Wars: The Clone Wars. The MarvelStar Warscomics revealed that Vader somehow trapped the Grand Inquisitor’s spirit, forcing him to guard an abandoned Jedi outpost.
Ezra Bridger
Ezra Bridger was the main protagonist ofStar Wars Rebels, growing from a street rat to a powerful Jedi. After his parents were arrested for defying the Empire, Ezra had to fend for himself, until he met theGhostcrew and joined them as a rebel. Kanan Jarrus realized Ezra was Force-sensitive and agreed to train him as a Jedi, though the road was long and challenging for them both. Ezra fought alongside the Rebellion for years and earned the respect of many friends and allies, who all agreed to help free his home planet of Lothal from the Empire.
During the Battle of Lothal, Ezra summoned the purrgil, a group of space whales who could travel through hyperspace. To stop Grand Admiral Thrawn and remove him as a threat, Ezra allowed himself to disappear into the far reaches of space, and his friends spent years looking for him. InAhsokaseason 1, they found him in another galaxy on a planet called Peridea, where he had carved out a peaceful existence with the locals. Ezra was able to make it back to his galaxy and reunite with Hera Syndulla, and only time will tell what adventure awaits him next.
6Kanan Jarrus
Kanan Jarrus was born Caleb Dume and raised as a Jedi, serving as the Padawan of Jedi Master Depa Billaba. When Order 66 happened, Caleb wanted to defend his master but was ordered to run, and the guilt would haunt him for years. He assumed the name Kanan Jarrus and went into hiding, eventually meeting Hera Syndulla. Together, they gathered a crew and formed their own rebel cell, helping fight the Empire wherever they could.
TheGhostcrew later met Ezra Bridger while pulling a heist on Lothal, and Kanan took him as his Padawan. Although the two struggled at first, they became unstoppable as master and apprentice, and the crew became Ezra’s family. Their relationship was tested again when Kanan was blinded by Darth Maul on Malachor, but Kanan found his way back and became a stronger Jedi than before.Kanan sacrificed himself to save his friends from an explosion, and Hera later gave birth to their son, Jacen Syndulla.
5Sabine Wren
Sabine Wren was a Mandalorian who left the Imperial Academyafter the weapons she helped create were used on her own people. She eventually met Kanan Jarrus and Hera Syndulla, joining their crew and coming to see them as her new family. When theGhostcrew discovered the Darksaber, an ancient Mandalorian lightsaber that could unite her people, Sabine trained with Kanan to wield the blade properly. She helped lead the Mandalorians in rebellion against the Empire, passing the Darksaber on to Bo-Katan Kryze, who many considered the rightful ruler of Mandalore.
Although Sabine was never portrayed as a Force user inStar Wars Rebels, Kanan did start her down the learning path. This aspect of Sabine’s character was explored inAhsokaseason 1, which revealed that she had become Ahsoka Tano’s Padawan after the events of the series. The two had a falling out around the time Sabine’s people were massacred by the Empire, but they two reunited to find Ezra Bridger.Sabine was finally able to use the Force on Peridea, but while Ezra escaped and returned home, she and Ahsoka found themselves stranded in another galaxy.
4Fifth Brother
First Appearance:Star Wars Rebelsseason 2, episode 4 “Relics of the Old Republic”
After the Grand Inquisitor’s death at the end ofStar Wars Rebelsseason 1, more Inquisitors were tasked with hunting down theGhostcrew. The first one introduced was the Fifth Brother, a former Jedi from the planet Artemesium. He pursued theGhostcrew relentlessly, engaging Ezra Bridger, Kanan Jarrus, and even Ahsoka Tano in lightsaber duels on multiple occasions. However, he was ultimately no match for Maul, dying at his hand on Malachor in theStar Wars Rebelsseason 2 finale.
The Fifth Brother went on to appear in several storiesset before the events ofStar Wars Rebels. He made his live-action debut alongsideObi-Wan Kenobi, where he competed with the Third Sister for Darth Vader’s favor after the Grand Inquisitor was seemingly killed. He has also appeared in the MarvelDarth Vadercomics,Star Wars: Inquisitor - Rise of the Red Bladeby Delilah S. Dawson,Star Wars: Jedi - Battle Scarsby Sam Maggs, and most recently the comic seriesStar Wars: Inquisitorsby Rodney Barnes and Ramon Rosanas.
The Fifth Brother’s design was based on unused concept art fromStar Wars: The Force Awakens.
3Seventh Sister
First Appearance:Star Wars Rebelsseason 2, episode 5 “Always Two There Are”
The Seventh Sister was introduced immediately after the Fifth Brother in the appropriately titled season 2 episode “Always Two There Are.” What set her apart from other Inquisitors was the droids she carried, which could be used to spy on her enemies or aid her in a fight. Whereas the Fifth Brother was more strict and direct,the Seventh Sister liked to taunt and interrogate her prey.
Like the Fifth Brother, however, she was no match for Maul on Malachor. Maul held her in place with the Force and ordered Ezra Bridger to strike her down, but when Ezra couldn’t do it, Maul killed her himself. The Seventh Sister has also appeared in stories like the MarvelDarth Vadercomics,Star Wars: Inquisitor - Rise of the Red Bladeby Delilah S. Dawson, andStar Wars: Inquisitorsby Rodney Barnes and Ramon Rosanas.
2Eighth Brother
First Appearance:Star Wars Rebelsseason 2, episode 21 “Twilight of the Apprentice: Part 1”
Of all the Force users introduced inStar Wars Rebels,the Eighth Brother had the least amount of screen time. He only appeared in the season 2 finale, having tracked Maul to Malachor but was surprised to find three Jedi had arrived as well. He and the other Inquisitors engaged the Jedi and Maul but were defeated, so the Eight Brother tried to fly away by using his spinning lightsaber as a propeller. Unfortunately, his hilt had been damaged, and he fell to his death from the top of the Sith Temple.
1Bendu
First Appearance:Star Wars Rebelsseason 3, episode 1 “Steps Into Shadow: Part One”
While all the other Force users inStar Wars Rebelscommitted to the light or dark side, the Bendu proclaimed that he was the one in the middle. While he begrudgingly helped Kanan Jarrus whenever he came seeking advice, Bendu affirmed that he did not participate in conflict. He became enraged when the Empire brought war to his planet, but he blamed the rebels too. He unleashed his full power to drive everyone off the planet, and after being shot down, he either became one with the Force or disappeared somewhere else.
