TheHBO series featured the prominence of Valyrian steel through characters like Jon Snow, who wields the iconic “Longclaw,“or Brienne of Tarth, who was given “Oathkeeper” by Jaime Lannister. First, let’s consider the Valyrian steel swords we know about. 7Dark Sister

Anyone who’s seenHouse of the Dragonwill know of “Dark Sister,” which is held in the TV show by Daemon Targaryen. This isone of the two ancestral swords of House Targaryen, forged before Aegon’s Conquest. The first known owner was Visenya Targaryen, the older sister and one of the wives of King Aegon I Targaryen, a great warrior in her own right who established the order of the Kingsguard. From Visenya, Dark Sister was passed down to her son, Maegor the Cruel, and then occasionally held by his nephew, Jaehaerys I, who ruled for over five decades.
Bloodraven eventually became Lord Commander of the Night’s Watch but disappeared beyond the Wall.
Prince Baelon “the Brave” Targaryen held Dark Sister briefly before it was passed down to Prince Daemon, who wielded the blade during the War for the Stepstones and the Targaryen civil war known as the Dance of the Dragons. Without spoiling Daemon’s fate inHouse of the Dragon, Dark Sister was passed further down throughoutthe Targaryen dynastythrough Prince Aemon the Dragonknight and finally to Lord Brynden Rivers, also known as Bloodraven. Bloodraven eventually became Lord Commander of the Night’s Watch but disappeared beyond the Wall. Brynden is commonly believed to have become the Three-Eyed Crow.

“Lamentation” was theValyrian steel sword of House Royce, one of the vassals of House Arryn of the Vale. The Royces are represented inGame of ThronesandA Song of Ice & Fireprimarily by Ser Waymar Royce, the knight of the Night’s Watch killed in the prologue scene beyond the Wall. Lord Yohn Royce, also known as “Bronze Yohn,” is the chief agent of this house throughout the remainder of the series. However, neither of these characters ever touched Lamentation, as it was lost over a century before their births.
Duringthe Dance of the Dragons,Ser Willam Royce held Lamentation, but the blade was lost following his death in King’s Landing during a riot. Rumors suggest that Lamentation was last seen during the Storming of the Dragonpit, but the sword’s fate was entirely unclear. It’s doubtful we’ll see Lamentation inThe Winds of Winter, and there are no clues on where it might be. With roughly 170 years before its last known spotting, it could be anywhere in Martin’s vast world, but the most compelling idea would be that it’s still somewhere in the capital, possibly in the Dragonpit.
5Orphan-Maker

“Orphan-Maker” was another sword known for its uses during the Dance of the Dragons. It was originally held by House Roxton of the Reach and used by Jon Roxton ofthe Green factionat the Battle on the Honeywine and the Battles the Tumbleton. IfHouse of the Dragonintroduces Roxton and the sword, it should have a specific relevance pertaining to one of the show’s main characters.

“Brightroar” was the Valyrian steel sword of House Lannister, long before the events ofA Song of Ice & Fire. The greatsword was owned by the Kings of the Rock when the Lannisters ruled the Westerlands as monarchs prior to Aegon’s Conquest.King Tommen II Lannister sailed from Casterly Rock to the ruins of Old Valyria just after the Doom, hoping to obtain wealth and powerfrom the remains of the great empire. Instead, he and the sword were lost there forever. Brightroar doesn’t seem likely to appear in the books unless Euron Greyjoy stumbled upon it in Valyria.
The Lannisters paid an exorbitant amount of gold to purchase the sword from the Valyrian Freehold.
3Vigilance

“Vigilance” was the sword of House Hightower and was another blade lost in the aftermath of the Dance of the Dragons. The sword was wielded by Lord Ormund Hightower, who was recently cast forHouse of the Dragonseason 3.Following Lord Ormund’s fate in the civil war, Vigilance was never found. This is yet another blade that likely won’t have any relevance toA Song of Ice & Fire. It could be back in Oldtown with the Hightowers, meaning Samwell Tarly could end up spotting it, but that doesn’t seem likely.
2Truth
Last Held By Moredo Rogare
“Truth” is a Valyrian steel sword we know very little about, with the only information being brief mentions inThe World of Ice & FireandFire & Blood. Truth was owned by Moredo Rogare, a Lysene nobleman, but itslast known mention was nearly two centuries before the events of the novels. This sword is likely the least relevant to the main story and might even be one of the previously mentioned swords reforged.

“Blackfyre” is possibly the Valyrian steel sword that has had the most influence on the history of Westeros. This was the sword that Aegon the Conqueror invaded Westeros with and was then owned by most of the Targaryen kings, including Aegon II, though he isn’t shown having it inHouse of the Dragon. Eventually, Aegon IV gave the sword to his bastard, Daemon, who eventually established the cadet house, also named Blackfyre.Aegor Rivers, known as “Bittersteel,” eventually took the sword to Essos, where he founded the Golden Company.

It’soften believed that Aegon will retrieve Blackfyre from Illyrio Mopatis or from the Golden Company, solidifying his supporters' belief in his claim to the Iron Throne.
