Summary

Sweet Homeis over after three seasons, and I can’t wait to see what genres and characters Song Kang will tackle next. While Song Kang’s next K-drama may take a whileconsidering he is currently completing his mandatory military service, the 30-year-old actor is in a very exciting stage of his career followingSweet Homeseason 3’s endingand the success ofMy Demon. Having played six lead characters already between broadcast shows and Netflix webseries, Song Kang is among the most popular and talented Korean actors working right now.

Although it’s difficult to predict what an actor will do next, there are some genres that I would be happy to see Song Kang in. He has already starred in some of thebest Netflix K-dramas, two of which were original productions that premiered exclusively on the streamer. This ledSong Kang to become known as the “Son of Netflix,”which makes me confident thatSweet Homewill not be his last streaming show. Despite his extensive career, there are still some genres and formats that Song Kang hasn’t explored too much yet.

Hae-in and Hyun-woo from Queen of Tears and Gu-won and Do-hee from My Demon.

8 Best K-Drama Couples Of 2024

K-dramas are well known for their romances, and 2024 has delivered some great new love stories, including My Demon, Queen of Tears, and Lovely Runner.

8A Non-Romance Role In The Style Of Navillera

Navillerais the most underrated Song Kang K-drama, having allowed the actor to give a more subtle performance compared to his other roles. Unlike most of his shows,Navillerawas not about a romantic couplebut rather about two people from very different worlds who bonded over their love for ballet. Song Kang’s character learns a lot from form Deok-chul but also teaches him valuable lessons. The style and the tone ofNavilleramake it stand out among Song Kang’s shows.

SinceNavillera,Song Kang has played quite a few romantic leads, which is why I would love for him to tackle a more subtle role next.Navilleramay not have been as big asForecasting Love and WeatherorSweet Home, but it was a great show nonetheless. Now that Song Kang’s big-budget Netflix show has come to an end, a “smaller” show with a more dramatic storyline would be a great choice for his next project.

Sweet Home (2020)

7An Action-Packed K-Drama Thriller

Song Kang Hasn’t Played An Action Hero Yet

While Cha Hyun-su has a lot of action scenes inSweet Home, most of them have a fantastical element to them. In other words, most of the timeSong Kang’s characteris fighting inSweet Home, everything is being enhanced with visual effects. Between wings and giant monsters,Sweet Home’s action is far from grounded.I would love to see Song Kang as the lead in a more realistic thrillerin which he could play an action hero.

It would be fun to see Song Kang as a detective or soldier in an action-packed limited series.

The best K-drama thrillers include crime shows, detective stories, and more, none of which are subgenres Song Kang has explored in his career. Considering his Netflix reputation, I could see Song Kang leading a new webseries for the streamer, this time for a more grounded thriller. Netflix has done some great original K-drama thrillers, after all. It would be fun to see Song Kang as a detective or soldier in an action-packed limited series.

6Another Hilarious Rom-Com Like My Demon

Song Kang Was Just Too Funny In My Demon

Shows likeLove AlarmandForecasting Love and Weatherhad already been funny, butMy Demonis by far Song Kang’s most hilarious role. The show, which started at the end of 2023 and concluded as one of the best K-dramas of 2024, allowed Song Kang to show his comedy chops in a way that none of his previous roles had. The actor plays the titular demon fromMy Demon– a 200-year-old being who was once human but now despises humanity.

As expected, Gu-won ends up falling for a human,Kim Yoo-jung’s Do Doo-he. After seeing Song Kang in more serious roles such asNeverthelessandSweet Home, I had a blast seeing him as a demon who can’t help but fall in love with a human whose personality is the complete opposite of his. It may be too soon for Song Kang to tackle another comedic role sinceMy Demonjust ended, but I hope it wasn’t his last comedy.

5A Big-Budget Netflix Original (Different But From Sweet Home)

A Sci-Fi Or Fantasy K-Drama From Netflix Would Be Exciting

As the “Son of Netflix,”I predict that Song Kang will continue to start in original webseriesfor the streamer. If so, I’m excited to see what his next big-budget show for the platform will be.Love Alarmwas Netflix’s first original Korean series and displayed an impressive level of production value, not to mention the strong cast consisting of rising actors like Song Kang. Then cameSweet Home, Netflix’s biggest K-drama bet at the time.

Every Song Kang K-drama or Webseries

Forecasting Love and Weather(2022)

Man in the Kitchen(2017)

The Liar and His Lover(2017)

Baek Jin-woo

BeforeSquid Gamebecame Netflix’s biggest show of all time,Sweet Homewas their flagship original K-drama. Now that the monster series is over, Netflix has the chance to collaborate with Song Kang again for a new project. From sci-fi to fantasy, there are virtually no limitations as to what types of genres Netflix could tackle next for its next Korean webseries.Song Kang in a big-budget sci-fi show could be fascinating afterSweet Home, and so would be a fantasy role.

4A Grounded Romance Like Nevertheless

Nevertheless Was A More Realistic K-Drama

Neverthelessis the most unique of Song Kang’s romantic K-dramas in the sense that it tells a grounded, realistic story that ditches some of the genre’s tropes.Han So-hee and Song Kangplay very relatable characters who do not treat their potential relationship as a fairytale. Quite the contrary, but of them are afraid of committing to a serious relationship after previous experiences.Neverthelessis also a quitesteamy K-drama.

After playing a human turned into a monster and an immortal demon, it could be good for Song Kang to play a more relatable character like the one fromNevertheless. Having his character enter a complicated, messy relationship after the hilarious dynamic ofMy Demon’s lead couple also be fun.Neverthelessmade me emotional and attached to the characters, which is why I would love to see him in a similar show.

3A Romance K-Drama That Defies All Tropes Like Queen Of Tears

Song Kang is already one of the best actors of his generation, which is why he would be the perfect fit for a show that defies all tropes likeQueen of Tears. While all of his romantic K-dramas have been great, they mostly played safe when it comes to the expectations of the genre.Love Alarmwas a traditional high school drama with a love triangle;Forecasting Love and Weatherleaned heavily on its controversial lead couple;Neverthelessdid not have too many twists and was more of a slow burn, andMy Demonwas as funny as we expected.

There has yet to be a romance K-drama starring Song Kang that defies all expectationsand delivers something that is both heartwarming and tragic. A show in the style ofCrash Landing on Youwhere the outcome of the story is bittersweet, or a love story that is doomed from the start, would be inspired options for Song Kang’s next role.

2Another K-Drama Collaboration With Go Min-si

AfterLove AlarmandSweet Home,I hope Song Kang and Go Min-si work together again.Considering that their characters were not romantically involved inLove Alarmand thatSweet Homedid not give Hyun-su a definitive love interest, it could be interesting to have Song Kang and Go Min-si as the leads in a romantic K-drama. Their careers have so far mirrored each other in many ways, starting withLove Alarmand then becoming Netflix favorites. Go Min-si is now starring inThe Frogfor the streamer.

Hyun-su and Eun-yu’s scenes together inSweet Homewere a highlight of the show, especially in season 3 after they had spent so much time away from each other. Both great lead actors in their own right,Song Kang and Go Min-sicould make for a fantastic K-drama couple if given the right scrip. I would like to see them reunite for a project that is completely different from the horror K-drama, similar to when Go Min-si and Lee Do-hyun reunited for Youth of May afterSweet Homeseason 1.

1Bonus: Song Kang In A Hollywood Movie

Park Seo-joon Was Recently In The Marvels

After watching Park Seo-joon inThe Marvelsand Lee Jung-jae inThe Acolyte,I cannot help but imagine what Song Kang in a Hollywood movie or TV show would be like. Seeing Park Seo-joon join the Marvel Cinematic Universe for his first Hollywood role was incredibly exciting, even though his character, Prince Yan, only appeared for a couple of minutes. Lee Jung-jae’s role inThe Acolytewas substantial, with the 51-year-old actor playing one of the leading roles in the Disney+Star Warsshow.

Song Kang is expected to be discharged from the military in 2025.

Now that he has led one of Netflix’s most popular original shows for three seasons,Sweet Home, I would not be surprised to see Song Kang in a Hollywood project. Be it in a small role or a more significant part, Song Kang’s appearance in an English-language movie or TV show could be an exciting move for his career after so many great leading roles in K-dramas. The entertainment industry is more globalized than ever, meaning that actors appearing or even starring in productions from other countries aren’t as unlikely as it was until a few years ago.
