Even thoughSupernaturalended four years ago, I find myself still missing certain elements of the show.Supernaturalwas, and still is, one ofthe best TV shows of all timebecause of how engaging and compelling its characters and stories are.TheSupernaturalcastbrings some amazing characters to life, and quite honestly, it’s hard to imagine anyone else other than Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki playing Dean and Sam Winchester, respectively.

While it’s still hard to say goodbye to the Winchesters every time I rewatch it, I still hope to one day let my heart be broken by them all over again. I missSupernaturalfor so many reasons, and while demons and spirits are obviously important, other things take precedence.

Sam & Dean’s Brotherly Love Is So Heartwarming
The connection between Sam and Dean is the driving force ofSupernatural,and without it, the show wouldn’t be half as interesting as it is. While it is a tad frustrating that the pair spend most of the show jumping back and forth between Earth, Heaven, and Hell, it’s always reassuring to know that one will always pull the other back to reality in some way or another.Dean Winchester’s astonishing 111 deaths inSupernaturalalways destroy Sam, but the elder sibling always ensures that he comes back to be with his younger brother.
Several of Dean’s demises are caused by his self-sacrifice for Sam, which proves just how strong their relationship is. Even though they know that this can only result in pain, just as the Trickster warns them in the season 3 episode, “Mystery Spot,”the boys continue to throw themselves into danger for each other.However, considering their past and upbringing, it’s no surprise. While it’s rather depressing, I love Sam and Dean’s backstory.

There are lots of characters in the show who understand their lives to a certain extent, butSam and Dean are the only ones who truly get each other,and I miss seeing that on my TV screen.
4Castiel & Dean’s Love Story

If there’s one thing I still have a qualm withSupernaturalabout, it’s that the show spends years setting up Castiel and Dean’s romance, only for the incline to be more exciting than the drop.Dean and Castiel’s relationship timeline inSupernaturalis complicated, mainly because Dean is dead a lot of the time, butI wish that I could watch the tension between the pair grow all over again.Castiel’s character development is stellar, and the character who first appears in season 4 is very different from the one in season 15, and that’s because of Dean.
However, one of the things I appreciate most about their journey is that it’s flawed and not overly glorified, at least not bySupernatural’s writers.Castiel’s season 6 villain arc damages his relationship with Dean, especially because Dean unquestioningly trusts the angel.Dean grapples with Castiel’s betrayal inSupernatural, but ultimately, he can’t ignore the magnetic connection between them. Even though Dean and Castiel go through plenty of ups and downs, I can never bring myself not to be invested in their story.
Castiel should’ve never been able to feel anything more than apathy for Dean, but his deeply integrated mindset is slowly shattered by the handsome hunter, which I can’t blame him for.I am still shocked that we finally get an “I love you” from Castiel as he sacrifices himself for Dean at the end of season 15,but I’m also furious that he dies immediately after the words escape his lips. I tell myself that his phrasing is romantic rather than platonic, butSupernaturaldoesn’t confirm this. Still, I allow myself to be ruined by their love with every rewatch.

3Chuck’s Tyranny
God Is The Biggest Cause Of Chaos In Supernatural
Chuck is an absolutely baffling character inSupernatural,and while I find him frustrating quite frequently, the unhinged messes he creates are still one of my favorite parts of the show. However, his mindset throughout the show is often nonsensical, but that’s why I think he’s such an intriguing villain. Sam and Dean are initially his favorite people, but as the show progresses and the all-knowing God’s vulnerable ego cracks, his behavior becomes increasingly erratic. Plenty ofthings don’t make sense about Chuck inSupernatural, but that’s a strength of his character.
Supernaturaloften receives criticism for its hated storylinesin later seasons, although I love that this can easily be blamed on Chuck.Even the name Chuck is simply an alter ego, and it’s hilarious that God chooses this nameto be able to talk to Sam and Dean. While any name would be a funny choice, there’s something specifically comical about Chuck. The way Chuck plays puppet master over the Winchesters is absurd, but I can’t help but enjoy knowing that his next plot can only be even more convoluted and imaginative than the last.
Chuck’s books, which control Sam and Dean’s narrative, are a genius way for a bad guy to manipulate their victims. However,the constant ambiguity over how Chuck feels about the Winchesters keeps me on edge,and this is an amazing way for an antagonist to act. My favorite thing about Chuck is that it’s hard to predict exactly what he’ll do next, and although some of his plots are a bit over-the-top, I can never fault the character for fully committing to his reign of terror. Overall, Chuck is undoubtedly one of mymost loved villains inSupernatural.

The Hit Show Knows How To Break The Fourth Wall
Even though some dislike them, I am a big supporter ofSupernatural’s meta episodes. In fact, some ofthe best episodes from each season ofSupernaturalare the ones that completely throw out the show’s staple story-of-the-week format. Chuck’s tyranny links into this as well, like in the season 10 episode “Fan Fiction,” where Sam and Dean discover a play written by him with them as the main characters. “Changing Channels” is another fantastic episode that parodies various TV genres.

Supernatural’s attempts to break the fourth wall and acknowledge the audience are a refreshing change of pace for the show,and for such a long-spanning TV series, it isn’t afraid to try and mix things up. The most obscure and bafflingSupernaturalepisode, “The French Mistake,” is another level of meta for the show, however. I love seeing Sam interacting with Genevieve Padalecki, and the confused look on his face as he tries to understand that she isn’t Ruby is simply adorable. Plus, Misha Collins as himself is hilarious.
I missSupernatural’sattempts to be different and unconventional,even if some of these episodes didn’t quite hit the mark. It’s important for TV shows to notice when things need to be shaken up, and many others try to, but they don’t match the same commitment thatSupernaturaldoes. However, ifSupernaturalever does return to screens, this is a quality that I hope the show leads with, especially as it’s one of its several iconic staples.
1Sam Winchester’s Disastrous Relationships

While there are many defining features ofSupernaturalthat I miss, one less obvious one isSam Winchester’s romantic partners.The younger Winchester brother is terribly unlucky in love throughoutSupernatural,and he’s dated some of the most unusual and complex women to have ever featured on TV. For example, in one rare occurrence in which Sam gives up on Dean, he ends up dating veterinarian Amelia. Amelia and Sam’s relationship initially seems happy, but in reality, she is a bad match for him and is generally childish.
Sam’s abrupt marriage to super-fan Becky in “Season 7, Time for a Wedding!” is amoment that makesSupernaturalviewers quit the showand one that I find painful to watch. While I know that this isn’t really a proper relationship for Sam, I can’t help but realize just how terrible his dating record is when Becky poisons him and forces him down the aisle. However, one of Sam’s very best relationships is also his most soul-destroying, and I’m still angry that Eileen died. I believe that Eileen will forever be the love of Sam Winchester’s life.
I know that death is a standard element inSupernatural, butEileen’s demise is so poorly timed that it continues to frustrate me years later.Arthur Ketch’s crazed hellhound ripping Eileen to shreds always makes me scream at the TV screen, hoping she’ll suddenly be able to see the invisible creature and escape, but alas not. I always think thatSupernaturalkilling off its only deaf character in such a way is distasteful. Sam’s relationships are always unsuccessful, but I do miss the feeling of hope I had that he’d eventually get his happy ending.
