Few things sting more than a belovedTV showgetting axed before its time. While it might seem like a recent phenomenon, where streamers will unceremoniously cancel a show shortly after its release if it does not perform the way they expect. But, this has been going on for many years before that, with plenty of sitcoms not knowing if they’ll receive another season. The OfficeandParks and Recreationboth lived in a bubble for their first few seasons, before finding their footing and a core audience of devoted fans.

They both managed to last for many, many seasons, but other shows have not been that lucky.Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman, Glow, andMork & Mindyall set up a mystery to be resolved in a subsequent season, but none of them ended up getting picked up andwere canceled too soon.It may seem like a clever bargaining tactic, ensuring audiences are gripped and want to tune in again. It also puts pressure on networks who may want to avoid disappointing the viewers they have, but, the gamble does not always pay off.

Viewers hoped that the spin-off show,The Parkers, would address any of these burning questions, but alas, it’s still unknown. Santa Clarita Diet Poster

4Santa Clarita Diet (2017-2019)

Canceled After Three Seasons

This quirky zombie show mixed gore and comedy with a fun family dynamic. The first episode perfectly encapsulates the tone that the show would have, juxtaposing the idyllic and serene setting with a lot of very unsettling and violent scenes.Drew Barrymore showcased her innate charmwhich made her flesh-eating desires more forgivable, and Timothy Olyphant was wonderfully supportive in his role as her distressed-but-capable husband.

Santa Clarita Diet

Joel and Sheila Hammond live a typical life as real estate agents in Santa Clarita, California, but all that changes when Sheila becomes a zombie and starts craving human flesh. This horror comedy stars Drew Barrymore and Timothy Olyphant and lasted for a total of three seasons before being canceled in April 2019.

The show had a devoted fan base on Netflix, but, unfortunately,it did not get picked up for season 4. What was most disappointing is because of the very intriguing set up that happened at the end of the third season. After a string of tumultuous events, the finale sees the couple reconcile and, just as that happens,Joel gets attacked by a zombie spiderwhich could very much be the end of him.

Collage of All in the Family, Veep, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and Atlanta

As Sheila bites him in order to “save his life” by turning him into a zombie also, the camera fades away and viewers never found out what happened next. It would have been interesting to see them navigate their new normal and see what other adventures it could potentially bring.

3The Last Man On Earth (2015-2018)

Canceled After Four Seasons

The beauty of the show lies in its unpredictability, which, in some way, makes the cliffhanger ending fitting.Despite the title, Will Forte isn’t in fact alone on Earth. Instead, over the show’s four seasons, he runs into more and more characters, some of whom even stick around.

The 50 Best Sitcoms Of All Time

Sitcoms are one of the most popular formats of TV shows, and the best sitcoms of all time showcase exactly why they continue to dominate.

Known to feature many of his collaborators fromSaturday Night Live, as well as a host of very well-known actors, the show mixed comedy with some lofty themes like loneliness, and the fear of death, and the great unknown. By the time the last season rolled around, the show had its very own ups and downs. Though a critical success, the viewership wasn’t always reaching the desired levels, so, despite a big reveal in the last episode, the story was to ultimately end there.

The Last Man On Earth TV Poster

The Last Man on Earth

The Last Man on Earth is a fox comedy series set in a post-apocalyptic world where a virus has wiped out nearly all human life - at least, that’s what Phil Miller believes. Heading on a cross-country journey to find other survivors, Phil nearly succumbs to hopelessness until he finds a woman named Carol, who suggests the two attempt to repopulate the Earth. Soon enough, more and more humans are found alive, slowly building new communities - but Phil seems to have trouble acclimating to the new societal order.

With the core group finding a semblance of peace and harmony in their current situation,a new group of survivors arrivesto disrupt it. This development could easily have lasted many more seasons, as the options for conflict reached a new high. Will Forte has given interviews about where he wanted the show to go, but it seems none of it will come to pass.

How I met Your Father Poster

2How I Met Your Father (2022-2023)

Canceled After Two Seasons

A spin-offof the very popular, multi-season-spanningHow I Met Your Mother, this sitcom seemingly had a lot going for it. The cast included big names like Hilary Duff and Kim Cattrall, it had unlimited potential for cameos, and in-universe crossovers, but for some reason, was not able to recreate the magic of the original.

After only running for two seasons, audiences were nowhere near finding out who the endgame couples were, let alone who the father was to be.

It could also be that viewers were so scarred by the disappointing finale that seemed to shut down years of character development, that they just did not tune in, in the first place. The ratings could never match its predecessor, butthe show certainly had potential. The concept of reversing the main protagonists' genders, while not the most original, made sense as a continuation, and allowed for a similar mystery to be established straight off the gate.

How I Met Your Father

Unrelated to but set in the same universe as How I Met Your Mother, How I Met Your Father gives the audience a chance to see the original premise playing out with a new cast. In 2055, Sophie (Hilary Duff) is telling her son the story of how she met his father: a story that catapults us back to the year 2021, where Sophie and her close-knit group of friends are figuring out who they are, what they want out of life, and how to fall in love in the age of dating apps and limitless options. The show follows the exact framing device as How I Met Your Mother, with future Sophie speaking to her son, whom the audience has yet to see.

However, it gave a finite number of potential “father” as opposed to the misdirect from the first show. After only running for two seasons, audiences were nowhere near finding out who the endgame couples were, let alone who the father was to be. There were also many other references set up for future exploration, and potential for visits from the MacLaren gang, but none saw a fitting end.

1My Name Is Earl (2005-2009)

Many shows get canceled before they’re able to finish telling the story. There might be some open-ended questions left hanging in the air, or even a vague set-up of something that is to happen next. A lot of the time, these are subtle story points that viewers latch onto and hope to find out more about. So, if they don’t, they might be frustrated, but at least they do not feel misled. In the case ofMy Name is Earl, the last episode of the show ended with a screen that said “to be continued”. History, proved it wasn’t.

My Name Is Earl

My Name Is Earl follows Earl Hickey, a petty criminal who wins the lottery and embarks on a mission to correct his past wrongdoings. Created by Greg Garcia and first aired in 2005, the series explores themes of karma and redemption as Earl attempts to make amends for his past.

This cancelation was one of the more abrupt ones, especially when it comes to sitcoms. The plot neatly set up a future conflict that could have seen a completely new quest for the main character, while also shedding more light on what his influence was on those around him. The biggest surprise was becausethe show was not particularly strugglingfor viewers, hence the bold and confident cliffhanger. But, the creators wanted to renegotiate their contracts, which clearly did not end well.

My Name is Earlhas an 82% rating onRotten Tomatoes.

Seeing as there has been an influx ofTV showreboots and rewatch podcasts, there is still some possibility that answers might still be on the way. Some shows have resorted to one-off specials, movies, or even web series. With such demand for answers, it would no-doubt be welcomed by many viewers, old and new. In lieu of that, audiences are left with their own imagination, and may choose the ending of their choice.
